Coach accuses WVU of racism

A West Virginia University employee accused of making a racist remark to former assistant football coach Calvin Magee has left for a similar job at Arizona State. Magee told The Associated Press on Wednesday from Ann Arbor, Mich., that Larry Aschebrook made the comment, which is being investigated by the WVU Office of Social Justice. WVU President Mike Garrison asked the office in January to look into the allegations, which Magee initially made through his agent, Mike Brown. Brown said Magee, who is black, was told that he wouldn't have a chance at the head coaching job vacated by Rich Rodriguez because of his skin color. Aschebrook was named executive director of the Mountaineer Athletic Club, the athletic department's private fundraising arm, last August. WVU announced Wednesday that Aschebrook left for an athletic development job at Arizona State. Athletic director Ed Pastilong has said the only reason Magee wasn't considered for the job is because Rodriguez had announced in a December news conference that Magee would be joining him at Michigan.

Before us Michigan fans jump all over WVU, lets just realize that this guy was only one guy, and did not represent WVU as a whole. Its unfortunate people think and say things like this. Lets hope the WVU employee was only expressing his own personal opinions, and wasn't speaking on behalf of the larger WVU brass.

Luckily for WVU, it sounds like they are getting rid of this guy.

April 17, 2008  10:04 AM ET

Who's jumping? All the rabid WVU are too busy over on UM sites bashing RR to even care about WVU anymore. They have a one track mind and it all focuses on RR.

I can't really tell you how race relations in WV are but it is a state that continues to elect an ex **** klansman as their senator who is also a Democrat.

And Pastilong is either stupid or incompetent or both for not even going after Magee and offering him the job. His remark of, "i didn't bother since RR said he was going with him to UM" doesn't fly with me. They obviously tried to keep Barwis. So, it does smell fishy that they did not want a Black HC.

This just in.....West Virginia is a little behind the times....

April 17, 2008  10:30 AM ET

Why does race have to come in. When will we just look at a person as a person and not their skin color.

April 17, 2008  10:40 AM ET

Thats really sad, its 2008 cmon, if the guy can coach give him a chance!

I know I joke and get sarcastic about pretty much everything, but descrimmination in any form is unacceptable.

April 17, 2008  11:37 AM ET

always play the 'race card' when you lose ... it makes it hurt less and shifts attention away from your own shortcomings ... and the facts

April 17, 2008  12:53 PM ET

Careful 23, while there certainly are times when people take advantage of the "race card", to believe it is automatically the case is dangerous, naive, racist itself, or some combination thereof.

April 17, 2008  01:03 PM ET

"Aschebrook denied the allegations in a March 25 affidavit that he gave as his formal response. He said he did not talk to Magee on Dec. 19, as Magee had claimed, and did not go to his office that day. He also noted that Magee originally said the conversation occurred on Dec. 21, when Aschebrook was out of state."

"[WVU] Athletic Director Ed Pastilong has said that the reason he did not consider Magee was because the coach went to Michigan with Rich Rodriguez and was introduced as a future Wolverine assistant coach."

"'I've never made a racial claim,'' Magee said."

Sounds like much ado about nothing.

April 17, 2008  01:11 PM ET

Saying WV has racism is like saying McDonalds has burgers....duh

April 17, 2008  01:14 PM ET

Mike Barwis did not stand beside Coach Rod at the introductory UM press conference. Calvin Magee did. After that, Magee felt the need to ask the team's permission to "come back" to coach in the Fiesta Bowl.

WVU has no problem with black head coaches. WVU's current head coach of men's soccer is black. Last season, men's soccer won the Big East regular season championship, lost the league tourney 1-0, and advanced to as high as #3 in national rankings. It was the most successful season in school history.

No, the head coaching position of men's soccer is not the same as the head football coach position, but both positions are filled by the same director of the same athletic department. Obviously, WVU has no aversion to black coaches.

Sorry to spoil the party with facts.

April 17, 2008  02:01 PM ET

This story was and still is a joke, in fact, I can't believe anyone in their right mind would still keep us posted on these absurdly false accusations. Do you honestly think that if these race statements had been made that Magee would return to help coach the team at the Fiesta Bowl. NOT. Another interesting note that this article blatantly leaves out is the fact that Magee shares the same agent as Rich Rodriguez...shocker. So with Rich still fighting to deny his contract, it makes perfect since that Mike Brown (agent) would continue to stir the pot in regards to this ridiculous story. And, for anyone who actually cares, WVU has hired three excellent African American coaches. Ah, I'm still laughing about this racism nonsense, how can you not?

April 17, 2008  02:02 PM ET

Saying Michigan has liars is like saying Detroit has murderers...duh!!!

April 17, 2008  02:05 PM ET

To clear up good senator's Robert Byrd's name lets for instance look at this fact, he was the member of the clan for no more than a few months in his teen years from 15-17 years old. Hell, President Bush did coke and drank heavily in the 80s. But let's not mention that Byrd is one of the most respected senators in US History and one of the strongest advocates of the Constitution. Unlike notably racist politicians like Trent Lott and the late Strom Thurmond.

Wow insanewvufan, keeping it classy.

I forgot how funny racial discrimination is, thanks for reminding me.

At least you didn't make a bunch of dumb comments to make it look like all the stereotypes about WVU folks are true. Oh wait, you did...

April 17, 2008  02:33 PM ET

Please...for the love of God read these articles and tell me the discrepancies in what is being reported.

As an osu fan I love this. A friend emailed me this link a few minutes ago with the wvu employees affidavit

http://dailymail.com/static/AschebrookAff.pdf

You Michigan fans look like idiots... Your coach fabricated a racial discrimination story because he was pissed at his employers. HAHAHAHA Glad to see the Michigan I know returning. Stay Classy Michigan... You and your "Michigan Men" lol

P.S. Please don't post a fabricated reply accusing me of being a racist to make your response look better.

What a mess at WVU

April 18, 2008  08:56 AM ET

Me personally could care less about the WVU situation. The bigger issue is all the bordrline racila commens that are going on within this post. Why do we continue to make mountains out of mole hills? It's obvious that racism is still strong but covered up in many situations. What we should be doing is looking at ourselves with all the racial tention flowing in these post and look at ourselves and try to figure out why we say we're not racist but continue to make racist remarks. I personally could care less about skin color or any other bias. But everyone has something about them that could be considered racist. Think about it!

April 18, 2008  09:05 AM ET

I love how this story leaves out one GLARING point....

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3351487

The above article gives a more complete story of what is going on. If this guy really was a racist, why would RR offer him a job at UM??? Am I the only one who thinks that's a little fishy?

April 18, 2008  09:06 AM ET

You guys have zero clue what your talking about. Larry Ashbrooke worked for WVU for, what, 12 months, how would he know its hiring practices. Additionally, Ashbrooke has never lived west of the Mississippi until hired by WVU, what does he know about WVU, NOTHING.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, Ashbrooke said, in a sworn affidavit, that Magee is full of $hit, and the alleged comments were totally fabercated, later RR offered him a job at UM.

UM has the raw deal here, not WVU, the facts are still not in yet, RR thinks he can take over the university evidenced by this "don't worry, I'll get you a job at UM tomorrow" commets. You guy have NOT A CLUE what your talking about.
