Chevy pushing alternative fuels

Chevrolet is continuing its effort to have NASCAR make alternative fuels a priority. "We're pushing hard -- we probably are the instigators a little bit," Chevrolet Vice President Brett Dewar said during the Texas race weekend. "We believe in green racing, and we believe it is very appropriate to do that. We believe it's time. We think racing can also be green, and we would like it to be biofuels." NASCAR executives have indicated that alternative fuels are a priority. "They're definitely receptive," Dewar said about NASCAR. "They've got fuel providers, and it's a transition, and I don't want to mitigate the fact that some work has to get done. There's modifications to the engines, but we do it to our vehicles today."

NASCAR is NOT a sport. It's more like a trailer park gathering.

April 17, 2008  09:09 AM ET

Let's put you in one of these cars in 100+ degree weather for 500 miles and see how you feel afterwards... if you make it that far.

I'm all for this idea actually.

April 17, 2008  09:47 AM ET

me too ... wish i could afford one of those nw flex fuel cars ... 3.35 a gallon here in Dallas/Ft Worth.

Broadhead

This idiot has offended alot of people on this site.....soon to be gone under his rock again. He thinks driving his Pink Gremlin is the same thing as Nascar lol

April 17, 2008  10:18 AM ET

Yes, but my pink Gremlin has flames on the side.....looks pretty cool......the chicks dig it!

April 17, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Well thats different. You know Nascar fans are sick of the non-sport comment. Tell the teams that. They spend more time than most other sports preparing, and I think it involves more strategy than baseball. Damn...I responded to that comment again.

April 17, 2008  11:09 AM ET

He sucked you in Jackman....He got your goat..I just ignore stupidity, and ignorance.

April 17, 2008  11:19 AM ET

I think they owe it to the fans to use alt fuels, I mean if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction sitting in the stands can get you hammered in a bad way. But money will always win out, Sunaco (is that even spelled correctly, we don't have them stations around here) would have to buy into the idea.

April 17, 2008  11:29 AM ET

In my hometown, we have a neighborhood were the homeowners never mow their yards, have junked out cars in the front, privacy fences that have fallen over, paint peeling from the house. Every vehicle in the driveways have some sort of NASCAR sticker. Just completely run down. THIS IS NO JOKE......the locals here refer to this part of town as NASCARville.

As far as it being a sport......How far can Jeff Gordon hit a baseball? Can Tony Stewart sack a QB, Can Dale Jarret hit a slapshot past a goalie, and can Dale Jr. slam dunk?

I'm not trying to insult anyone. I'm just pointing out why a lot of people don't think of NASCAR as a sport and why it has the trailer park image.

One thing I am curious about, and I'm not trying to be racist as I'm an African American myself, but why does it seem that NASCAR fans are all white?

April 17, 2008  11:40 AM ET

I forgot to mention.......the drivers all have seriously big onions. I wouldn't want to do that.......but it's still not a sport :)

April 17, 2008  11:42 AM ET

SERIOUS QUESTION:

Does Dale Jarret even race anymore? I have an ex-brother-in-law who was a big fan. I loved giving him crap.

April 17, 2008  11:59 AM ET

I did not know the drivers had "big onions"...wonder how they grow them LOL
On the topic, this is a move in the right direction. I use Sunoco for my own car, which is a typical car, but next year when I am looking to upgrade, I will give much more thought to environmental impact in what I purchase.........it is time for everyone to focus more on that, especially in racing where consumption is so huge.

April 17, 2008  12:06 PM ET

Okay a social comment broadhead - I like that. I assure you there are black fans. In the fall Charlotte race I saw a pretty good %, more than previous years. You just have to check out a race and see if its for you. You would be surprised how large and diverse the Nascar community is.....its a huge friendly crowd.
Where is the run down neighborhood you are talking about?

April 17, 2008  12:14 PM ET

2 blocks away:(

It's kinda like hockey. Do you know what it feels like to be the only black man in a stadium of 18,000?

Are all drivers white? Just a question.....nothing racial!

April 17, 2008  12:38 PM ET

Broadhead = for a Black Man you ask some real stupid questions
there ARE Black drivers,,and there ARE many African Americans
in the stands watching the races - turn your damn TV on and watch
befor making remarks like you have.

April 17, 2008  01:39 PM ET

I was doing his homework for him Hawkman. Its like me making a broard generalization of Pakistan.

April 17, 2008  02:16 PM ET

For the record, I like Nascar and Indy racing and
I am NOT
a redneck or a Christian
Do not live in a trailer
I HATE
Country Music
Republican Administations especially the current one
Ciggerettes and chew
I drive a brand new Mustang GT, will be switching to a 2009 or 10 Camaro and neither will have any stickers at all on them, never
I sat at the race last month and there was an entire family in the row in front of
me and guess what, they were black, and we got along just fine
Finally racing became a sport when one caveman raced another around a tree

April 17, 2008  03:05 PM ET

If they're talking ethanol, they can just keep on going.

Yeah, it doesn't burn as much oil directly, and it's cheaper per gallon. But it gets worse mileage, so there's not much of a cost savings there. And a whole crapload of oil is used to produce ethanol, so combine that with its own emissions which are roughly the same as that of regular gas and ethanol actually ends up worse for the environment.

Now if they're talking some other kind of alternative fuel, like hydrogen or even biodiesel, then I'm on board. But I'm kind of sick of ethanol being touted as this great thing when all it's done is help spike the cost of food.

April 17, 2008  03:16 PM ET

Hammered_everynight Well said buddy some of these dudes just
don't understand....^5@ you

April 17, 2008  03:21 PM ET

This would be a great idea. There is a push for ethanol nationally, and it would be good for the sports and for the growers to see how ethanol would perform in such a scenario.
