Rangers inside Brodeur's head?

Martin Brodeur got bumped and banged around, and did a little bit of diving as well. He even took his own mask off at one point during the middle of a Rangers' power play after getting jostled by Jaromir Jagr. The Devils goaltender rarely gets rattled, but it's fair to say he was a little bit like a James Bond martini last night. And Marc Staal's winning goal with 3:13 left that put Brodeur's Devils in a 3-1 series hole was a pretty stoppable shot, so perhaps the Rangers, even without the antics of Sean Avery, are getting inside Brodeur's head. He was whistled for diving when Fredrik Sjostrom was shoved into Brodeur by Devils defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski - Sjostrom somehow got a goaltender interference minor as well - and then, later in the second period, Jagr drove off the boards untouched and grazed Brodeur's mask while trying to jam in a shot.

This is the second year where Martin has looked a little shaky in the playoffs. I think the main issue is that aside from possibly White, the Devils don't have anybody to move these players away from the net.

April 17, 2008  08:39 AM ET

As a Ranger fan I have respect for Marty's abilties but LOVE that he is being beaten up this year! LETS GO RANGERS!!

April 17, 2008  08:40 AM ET

He is starting to look human in the era where defencemen can't clutch and grab and tackle forwards going towards the net. As Martin goes, so do the Devils, and it looks like they're going straight to hell this year.

April 17, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Maybe he should borrow J.S Giguere's Pads for the next game.
I think Marty does not get the support from the D he has been accustomed to and he is getting older...The Devils have let too much of their Team get away by hoping Marty will compensate for it. Devils are done!

April 17, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Haha, the mask coming off trick, classic Brodeur.
The Devs struggled with scoring all season, this shouldn't be a suprise.

April 17, 2008  09:19 AM ET

The Rangers are the better team and it shows.

April 17, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Where are all the Devil fans this morning?

To Brodeurs credit, he got kneed by Jagr while he was driving to the net. That is what knocked his mask off.

April 17, 2008  09:40 AM ET

I never realised what a bunch of winers and frankly, cheaters The Devils were. I can't believe what a crap artist Brodeur has become. Sutter needs to relax, he gets mad at Avery for playing, well, the way Sutter played. And I like Parises little chop to knock the goal stick from Henrik Lundqvist. Can you imagine the hoo-ha if Avery had done that to Brodeur? Madden is a punk. Having said all of this, I do believe that Brodeur isn't getting the support (read:clutching and grabbing by his defence) that he is used to.

Ah ha...the old, struggled with scoring all season long trick!
Durk-Pehaps you should enlighten the Devil as to ..."The old hat trick".

April 17, 2008  09:53 AM ET

Mr. Efizzle,
You may be mistaken. Broudeur was hit by Jagr's butt, and that wasn't much of a bump (Jagr got pushed into him, as was the case with almost every collision with Brodeur) Brodeur went down like he was shot, as always.

April 17, 2008  09:55 AM ET

I don't think that's Marty in net at all there. With that hair-cut...yes, I'm sure...why that's, that's ED GRIMLEY.
Well that explains it...switch the old goalie with Ed Grimley trick.

April 17, 2008  10:09 AM ET

MCelt91,

Where have you been the last 10 + years.

The Devils were always a bunch of cheaters.

April 17, 2008  10:26 AM ET

Now this is very, very interesting. The other day I had to come on here and listen to Devils fans, or even just Rangers haters (there is no reason to hate NYR, we have 2 cups in 60+ years), tell me how the Rangers were getting outplayed, how certain instances of luck contributed to the Devils demise, how the officiating was skewed, blah blah blah.

Now I arrive on this thread and where are all of you? The series is 3-1. Are the Rangers still getting outplayed? Is Avery still the worst person ever to be born? Nah. Dont think so.

Marty Brodeur, with all due respect, fell to the ice like a house of cards when bumped by Jagr. This is the same Brodeur that came out of his crease to bump Avery and draw an interference penalty.Sutter wants to tell us that 'there was definitely alot of goaltender contact, and if it wont get called, we'll do the same'...or something like that. This is hockey, Sutter. Stop whining.

April 17, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Efizzle,
I guess I never realised it. Could they have been as bad as they are now? I knew they were a bunch of clutch and grab guys, but that was the game for awhile. I'm talking about the diving, the whining, the sneakey slashes...that stuff. They look like the Flyers now. I have lost all respect for Brodeur. As an olde goalie myself, I was always impressed with him, even though I knew that he always had a lot of defence. Now, he's just a crybaby and a cut rate Ron Hextall

April 17, 2008  10:36 AM ET

hell'z yea we are look how bad he's playing or he's just old

April 17, 2008  10:38 AM ET

I'm not going to denigrate Martin Brodeur here, but 2 instances last night stuck out in my mind. He dove twice and was whistled once for it. Is this what it has come down to? Pandolfo making quotes to the AP about the Rangers 'getting away with it' and 'we will go at their goalie'...I mean...what have we been watching all along? Is this tennis? Its freakin hockey for cryin out loud. You go to the net. Thats what you do. Because Brodeur is flopping around on the ice like a wounded walrus doesn't mean the Rangers are getting away with stuff.

Insanity.

April 17, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Martin Brodeur is working a piece ... plain and simple ... and in day's past, it might've worked. The fact that he was whistled for flopping ought to be enough to put this conversation to rest (gosh, how embarrassing were those dives?) And the fact that the slash on Henrik's stick wasn't called - AND lead to a goal - is pretty telling too.
Independent of this, I haave to say that the officiating has been pretty poor in this series - I've seen numerous obstruction penalties go uncalled, too many men penalties not called, and the inexplicable icing call on the power play is still a head-scratcher ...
Let's finish this out so we can start beating up on Cindy next! GO RANGERS!

April 17, 2008  11:07 AM ET

mcelt91,

I cant argue with that. He is letting goals through his legs alot like Hextall used too.......

April 17, 2008  11:08 AM ET

Rangers haven't necessarily rattled Brodeur, I thought Staal's show was pretty sick BTW. They are just the better team and it shows.

Brodeur did get creamed once and embeleshed it (as always). But I loved it when he finally got called for diving--about time!

BTW mr sportswriter: I don't hear any crying about Parise slashing the stick out of Lundqvist's hands when the puck was nowhere near him which lead to a goal. If Avery did that to Brodeur it'd be a whole different story!

Go Rangers. Keep the officiating clean next series refs!

"Because Brodeur is flopping around on the ice like a wounded walrus doesn't mean the Rangers are getting away with stuff."

Walrus is ok but I think he is more like a Beached Whale.
