Panthers may bite on Ryan
Posted: Thursday April 17, 2008 05:44AM ET
For weeks, it has appeared the Panthers would draft an offensive tackle, defensive lineman or perhaps even a running back with their first-round pick, the 13th overall selection. But with 10 days left before the NFL draft, it has become clear the Panthers also are enticed by the possibility of landing a player who would dramatically alter the direction of the franchise -- Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan. Carolina general manager Marty Hurney acknowledged the team's admiration for Ryan on Tuesday, gushing at times in describing the draft's top-rated quarterback.

Is gushing even a word?

Report Offensive CommentI thought only women gushed, you know, like Miss America when she hears her name announced as the winner. Or Paula Abdul when she.........nevermind.

Report Offensive CommentMariah Carey should simply just take her clothes off from now on. She barely covers anything anyway.

Report Offensive CommentUnless the Panthers trade up in the draft there is no way he will be there at #13. If he falls to B'more at 8 they are taking him. QB is not Carolina's biggest need. Everything I've seen or read says Delhomme will be 100% for TC.

Report Offensive CommentI don't think there is a QB worthy of a 1st round pick in this year draft. These guys this year are 3rd picks at best. I think Henne will be the best of the class down the road.
Brady Quinn was better than all of these QB's and look how he slide, thanks to the Dolphins......

Report Offensive CommentPanthers will get a "bit" alright - right in the behind for picking Ryan with the 13th pick. Panthers has other needs rather obtaining a quarterback at that slot.

Report Offensive CommentIf he goes to the Panthers then he will sit on the bench for a season. But no question he would start for them next year.

Report Offensive CommentIf Ryan falls to 13 and the Panthers draft him, they need to consider trading him for an offensive lineman. Having a good QB doesn't do anyone any good if there's no one to block for him.

Report Offensive CommentFirst, we are putting way to much into Hurney's statement. Ryan is arguably the best all-around QB in the draft, of course the Panthers would like to have him but they would also love to have elite players in the draft...who wouldn't. As for the possibility of Jake Delhomme being out of a starting job, don't hold your breath. He solidified his spot last season while on injured reserve, mainly due to the horrible job David Carr (former #1 overall pick) did while he was out. I expect Carolina to pick up a QB in the draft, but Ryan is just out of the question without trading up to the Top 5 draft order.
