Inside Junior's Whisky River

There are no race cars hanging from the ceiling, and country music is only a small part of the background noise. Metal and leather decor dominate. Whisky River, located in downtown Charlotte's EpiCentre, is Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s latest venture outside the racing world. Earnhardt Jr., the majority owner, describes the bar/nightclub as "Carolina country" but doesn't want it to be thought of as a strictly country hangout. "Basically ... if I'm sitting in a bar, and I'm not having a good time, this is everything that I would change," he said. "This is how I would make it." That includes a large dance floor, plenty of TV screens (that will show various areas of the bar), a mechanical bull and fiber optic lighting on the bars themselves. Already immersed in television (Hammerhead Entertainment) and race-track development (Alabama Motorsports Park), Whisky River is yet another extension of his life -- and interests -- away from the track.

Now this is a smart move. Bring to the fans what he likes. Those expecting a C/W bar with sawdust on the floor don't really know Jr. He likes his hip/hop, country, rock, etc. Very eclectic.

Dont expect to see him there. Its just another nightclub in downtown Charlotte. There is a lot of competition. The trend has been highrise condos so there is a built in customer base. I think it is a smart move and I am sure he has a good team of managers. You know the Jr worshippers will check it out at least once....and that alone will be a good flow.

Agree JMRob -- where can I get a T-Shirt?

April 17, 2008  10:36 AM ET

Can believe I am responding but they have a website. Also, JR Motorsports has a full line of merch........there you go.

I have always said Jr was not the simple country hick, he sometimes sounds like, when he is being interviewed.....probably Kelley is his brainstorm, but he has smarts also......good move Jr.

To quote the Brady Bunch

"Junior Junior Junior" Who cares. Stop with the Junior stuff. PLEASE

"Whiskey River take my mind."

Just imagining a river of whisky is awesome. That would be my dream. I cannot swim but I wouldn't mind drowning in a whisky river.

Good point Jackmanrob. I have heard a lot about Charlotte as a city and the condos are intriguing. I am looking to move out of NYC and have my eyes towards the South. I might need to check Charlotte out.

No more yankees J Hova.....I was the last. The story I hear over and over is I visited once and that was enough to convince me. Wait...its a hell whole and we hate Princes.

When Junior does something, it's all out and done right. Good for him. Glad to see he's investing in his future and diversifiying his assets.

April 17, 2008  06:19 PM ET

If you don't want your bar to be a country hangout, don't have an electric bull......get a real one!

April 17, 2008  06:33 PM ET

If he doesn't start winning he will have a lot of time to spend on his off track interests......JUST KIDDING

April 17, 2008  07:26 PM ET

He has a electric bull and has fiber optic bar lighting. Gee whiz the only thing missing is a velvet jesus mural hanging on the wall. LOL

Just because the Cup boys have a weekend off, doesn't mean SI should stop reporting on actual racing news.

This is just another "We love Junior" piece that has absolutely nothing to do with racing. I expect to see articles about Jimmy's attempts to buy a personality and Jeffies forays into interior decorating.
