McNair puts Ravens in tough spot

The surprising announcement that Steve McNair is hanging up his spikes landed with the blind-sided force and impact of a sucker punch to the back of the head. The effect certainly wasn't intentional -- McNair was always professional, sincere and classy during his brief stint in Baltimore -- but this knee-buckling retirement blow was thrown when the Ravens weren't looking. Do the Ravens draft a quarterback? Do they find another veteran? Is Troy Smith ready for more snaps? Would fans tolerate another year with Kyle Boller as starter?

Not a revelation to me. When was the last time they had a QB ? ?????? Think really hard now.....Cleveland......Brian Sipe. OK. Enough said.

April 18, 2008  06:48 AM ET

Okay....I apologize...to Kosar and Testeverde.

April 18, 2008  06:50 AM ET

How was this a sucker punch?
Ravens knew it was coming.

This post is lame. They were going to draft Matt Ryan if he fell anyways. Even though Ryan is going to be a bust. I say draft OT/OG Branden Albert or LT Ryan Clady.

April 18, 2008  07:18 AM ET

Agree KPKahder, he played very poorly last season anyway,

April 18, 2008  07:18 AM ET

What tough spot? Instead of 4 wins they will get 3?

April 18, 2008  08:16 AM ET

Best spot in this years' draft? Get drafted as the third corner behind the two the raisins have and have them train you.

April 18, 2008  08:17 AM ET

I am glad Bond is still spying and naming names.

April 18, 2008  08:17 AM ET

I think Dilfer is available.

April 18, 2008  08:18 AM ET

this wasn't a blindside. he informed the team before the draft. which is a stand up move on his part. he could have stayed on the roster, collected more cash, and bailed on them in pre-season. that would have been blindsiding the team.

but letting them know before the draft is doing a classy thing.

April 18, 2008  08:47 AM ET

I agree w/PW. McNair was always a classy and gutsy player. He's played through injuries without a complaint and he's done enough where he does not have to explain himself. Lets be honest here...how many games were the Ravens going to win anyway this year? 5 at most 6 games?

April 18, 2008  09:01 AM ET

This is crazy! Not one Pacman thread. I need my Pacman coverage! Are negotiations on or off?

April 18, 2008  09:37 AM ET

The only way he puts them in a tough spot is if he said he wanted to keep playing. This is the best for everybody.

April 18, 2008  10:57 AM ET

It wasn't a blindside. He's not at the top of his game anymore, and there are better choices for QB than McNair now. But MAN, he was great in Tennessee. Every game, we would turn to each other and say, "What's he gonna do THIS time?" And it was always something exciting. We missed him in TN when he left. I love that guy, and I hope he has all he's every dreamed of. He's just a class act.

April 18, 2008  11:13 AM ET

I wish the NFL had more class acts or at least more stories in the media about them. I'm so tired of hearing about Vick, Pacman, Henry, et al.

April 18, 2008  05:31 PM ET

He was a warrior.

Emphasis on WAS.

If he thought last season was indicative of something left in his tank he is deluded.

Then again Gus Frerotte is still in the league head butting grandstands.

Look north to the CFL and bring in Ricky Ray, the Edmonton Eskimoes QB. He's got 5 years pro experience and a 97 rating.

April 19, 2008  11:13 PM ET

hey fanoffootball, if you honestly think the ravens will win only 3 or 4 games this season you're outta you're friggin' mind.

and outofshapeandinjured, was your comment supposed to be lame and not funny ? because if it was congrats, you succeeded. what's wrong w/ chris mcalister ? here's the answer: nothing. he's still a great CB. Rolle isn't anymore but so what ? they'll be fine on defense, i'm not worried. now run along and stick to celebrating your j-hawks will ya ?

This is actually a valid suggestion. I live up "north" and there are always a couple of CFL QBs who one would think should warrant a look from NFL teams.

Yet the seem to be happy recycling their existing QB's and throwing money away on washed up veterans.

I would think looking "outside the box" might be a good idea sometimes. You don't have to toss big bucks at them to bring them in and there is always a possibility a Warren Moon might pop out.
