Sonics owner fires back at officials

With the NBA Board of Governors today expected to approve his bid to move the Sonics to Oklahoma City, team owner Clay Bennett's attorneys already are signaling his strategy for the next big battle: arguing to a federal judge that Seattle's KeyArena lease lawsuit is just a ruse to force a team sale. Striking back after a week of bad publicity, Bennett's attorneys filed a federal-court motion accusing Nickels of a "Machiavellian plan" to force him to sell the Sonics back to Seattle investors led by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

Is it really that hard to check the spelling on 8 words before you create a sign. Obviously, the creation of the rest of the sign took longer than it would have to check the spelling of THIEF. For that alone, the Sonic's fans deserve to lose their team.

he typed 2-3 letters for each piece of paper so spellcheck wouldn't work. He should have just typed the entire text, spell checked it, then retype each print out a piece of paper with one letter on it.

um Theif .. your telling me this whole time I was spelling it wrong.
Ahhhhhhh, Seattle education at its best. All those Latte screwing you guys up.

Learn to spell first then focus on keeping a team.
Damn grunge hippies has their priorities all screwed up.

Bennett's motion is a complete joke. I hope the judge sees through this pathetic motion. The fact remain that Bennett is the one who sought arbitration to break the lease. The fact remains that Bennett and his group were privately talking about relocating the team before the sale was finalized and even as they 'negotiated' their absurd $500 arena proposal. The fact remains that well before anything the city of Seattle did with this supposed interested local buyer Bennett was working to relocate the team and break the lease agreement while saying publicly that he wanted to keep the team in Seattle. Bennett is the one with the 'Machiavellian plan'. He's just pissed he got caught and his true actions and intentions are going public. Save Our Sonics!

Bennett got caught with both hands in the cookie jar and is now trying to shove his foot in his mouth, too. It's not going to work, and now he'll be forced to sell the team. I love it... Go Sonics! Down with Clay Bennett!

As a resident of Seattle, and a Sonics fan, I hope the city wins its lawsuit with Bennett, and he is forced to keep the team in Seattle for two more years, draining millions from this guy's pockets. The league, embarrassed by all of the negative publicity, will give Bennett the Grizzlies, Bobacts, or Hornets (No-we want them in Seattle if the Sonics leave), and keep the Sonics in Seattle.

Or, worse case scenario, Stern pitches a fit, and locks Seattle out for not rolling over and submitting to his will.

Bennett isn't trying to work a solution to the problem. He wants to take the team to his hometown of Oklahoma City. As far as I'm concerned, he knew where the team was when he bought it. He should sell, or settle.

David Stern loves the idea so I bet the Sonics will be gone soon. Just like David Stern loves having the power to dictate NBA playoff games and let the refs determine the out come.

I don't follow the NBA too much, but this story really makes my blood boil. Fans from cities in situations like this should get some sort of voice in these matters. Without them there'd never have been a team around in the first place. I'm glad Seattle has some sort of chance to win this one and stick it to their unscrupulous owner.

The sad thing is that the Sonics have been in Seattle for 41 years. How long will it be before the team fails miserably in OKC due to a significantly smaller fanbase and revenue base and are forced to be sold and relocated once again? Why not just be sensible and sell the franchise back at a profit and take the money to start anew and establish your OWN legacy? Too hard, I guess...

Bennet and Stern are both terrible for creating this situation. I don't know who I have more contempt for at this point, Stern or Bennett? I'm beginning to lean further towards Stern each day, especially after the drivel I read about it on ESPN.

Are they going to keep the Sonic name once they move to Oklahoma or go with something different? They could go with the tornado theme. Tornadoes, Twisters, or Vortex. You could nickname the arena "Tornado Alley," "Storm Center," or "Vortex Zone." The people who follow the team from town to town would be nicknamed "Storm Chasers."

Stern said a while ago that both the Sonics name and team colors would remain in SEA should a team be possibly relocated there or a new franchise was started again. Kinda funny since Stern said that the NBA wouldn't return to SEA at all should the team relocate. Which is it, David?

What a tragedy...do we really think that Okalahoma City will be able to sustain a NBA franchise? Come on, they will be gone there in 5 years!!!

Oklahoma showed league officials there is a demand for pro basketball there when they hosted the New Orleans Hornets after Katrina.

Hey Texas made...before ripping on someones spelling, it might be wise to learn yourself!
It's "you're" not "your". ...You moronic brokeback Texan.
