Carter-Mets relationship 'strained'

Despite a career that was mostly spent with the Montreal Expos, former catcher Gary Carter considers himself a Met and wanted to go into the Hall of Fame as one. And his allegiance to the franchise is why he finds himself bewildered and disappointed that he is no longer working with the team that provided his only championship. Carter said his relationship with the Mets is currently "a bit strained," but he doesn't carry any animosity, only confusion. Despite his desire to remain in the organization, Carter felt he needed to search for other coaching opportunities.

always thought it was lame he spent most of his career on the expos and wanted to go in the hall as a met

Could it be because he is not a Latino player? Sounds racist but Minaya stacked the Mets with lots of Latino players...lots of OLD latino players

Didn't you know, the Mets play in Northern San Juan...

He was the manager of the Mets single A team a couple of years ago. Not sure what happened

Carter was elected into the hall in 2003 and he knew that the Expos would no longer exist the following year. That probably played a role in his decision

April 18, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Expos?!? Who are these Expos you speak of? Was that a minor league team in the 80's?

Sure. If you call having a better than .500 record in the National League East for most years during the '80s "minor league."

April 18, 2008  09:57 AM ET

Carter was undoubtedly a great player, but considering that he alwasy seemed like a self-obsessed jackass, nobody should be surprisd by a story like this.

April 18, 2008  10:08 AM ET

Carter was offered another minor league coaching job after he managed in Single A but turned them down. He said he turned it down because he didn't like the situation. It was probably either A or AA and he was looking for AAA or a major league job somewhere. Perhaps as hitting or bench coach with Mets. It's his own fault he isn't still coaching in the Mets organization. I'm sure the Mets would hire him again, but would he accept another minor league assignment. I don't know. Carter was my favorite Met as a kid and I would love if he managed after Randolph. Which could be next year depending on how the Mets do this year. I'm still predicting WS Champs 08.

Gee, me too: WS Champs in 2108!

I agree with Wesley.....Carter always seemed like a pompous ass to me.....even when he was on the Expos. It was easy to dislike all the pond-scum members of the 86 Mets....but Carter was always easy to dislike.

What was it about the '86 Mets you didnt like? The fact that they were 30 games ahead of your Cards or was it that they managed to party without crashing their cars, getting arrested and falling asleep behind the wheel?

April 18, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Henderson as 1B coach was a joke. I would take Carter over RH any day. Still, Carter was successful coaching in the minors; I'm sure he'll be back.

What I want to know is what happened to Mookie Wilson. One day he's the 1B coach, next day he's not. Is he coaching down in the minors somewhere??

April 18, 2008  10:57 AM ET

so what is the rule for entering the Hall of Fame -- that you once played for a team or does the team have to agree to you entering it under its banner?

April 18, 2008  10:59 AM ET

Gary needs to come back with the '86 Perm

April 18, 2008  10:59 AM ET

The current Mets regime has ALWAYS looked down on th '86 Mets. From the moment they popped the Champaign corks on the field. They will always be known as the drunk slobs who won the WS! Hey, I am proud of that fact. But obviously Freddy "Coupons" doesn't. Look how long it took for the '86 team to even be recognized on field for the fans.

April 18, 2008  11:02 AM ET

The HOF decides which team you go in under. This is because teams were paying players to choose them. I believe this also stems from Dave Windfield choosing the Padres over the Yankees. (Back when a player could choose), and stringing the Yankees along for the ride. I smiled when that happened.

April 18, 2008  11:06 AM ET

Well, as long as it brought a smile to your face

April 18, 2008  11:18 AM ET

What didn't I like about the '86 Mets? Well, I obviously didn't like how far we were behind them, that is true. But, since we beat them out in 85 and 87, I could live with that. What was so dislikable about them was the arrogant **** up and down their roster. Whether it was Strawberry and Gooden's drug use, Strawberry and Hernandez beating up women...... Carter just being obnoxious, Dykstra was obnoxious too. Darling was arrogant.... the list goes on and on. Now Mookie was a class act......him I was okay with.
