Star Ledger of Newark has this story as well.

Over Georgia the kid is nuts!

April 18, 2008  10:18 AM ET

Is this an LOI or just a verbal?

April 18, 2008  10:23 AM ET

He's a good QB. Good pickup for Schiano.

April 18, 2008  10:23 AM ET

He probably just wanted to stay close to home.

I really cant see why someone would want to go to Rutgers over a TOP SEC team. I mean the SEC women are hotter, the weather is better, and the team is more prestigous. The Big East gets 0 respect even though they have been posting teams in the top 10 periodically over the past years.

April 18, 2008  10:42 AM ET

The women are hotter? Ever been to Manhattan?

April 18, 2008  10:42 AM ET

84,

Just a verbal...but what will happen when Schiano decides to go to PSU?

April 18, 2008  10:55 AM ET

why would schiano go to psu after turning down a huge deal at michigan?

April 18, 2008  11:59 AM ET

Jc,

It's been circulated that PSU is Schiano's DREAM JOB. He was a graduate assistant coach at Penn State in 1990 and its defensive backs coach from 1991-95.

And he didn't turn down UM job as he was never officially offered the position. UM lured him with "fruit" but it wasn't an offer per my understanding. He just didn't bite.

Schiano will stay, Savage will sign his LOI next February and RU will win its first Big East Championship in 2010!!!

April 18, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Why would the kid pick RU over an SEC team? Here are some pretty damn good reasons:

1. Better chance for playing time/less competition for the QB1 slot on the depth chart - simply put, it's hard to make it in the pros if you don't play in college.

2. NYC is a ten-minute train ride away. This equals phenomenal marketing opportunities once he goes pro, not to mention what the city has to offer to college students. It's an expensive place, but it's not like star quarterbacks have to pay for anything.

3. Close to home. This actually does matter for some college students. At RU, he's actually closer to his home than he would be at Penn State. This only goes so far of course, because it's not like he would play at Temple.

4. Getting to play for a great coach who actually appears to be committed to the program. Certainly can't say the same for Miami, Louisville, or Pittsburgh.

5. Decreased fan expectations. Rutger fans still consider a bowl berth a success. Georgia and Tennessee consider anything less than a National Championship a failure, and treat the team accordingly, regardless of the team's actual quality.

6. Gets the opportunity to become THE face of the Rutgers program. If he can QB RU to a NC (not completely out of the realm of possibility given the increased talent level at the program the past few years), he will always be THE player associated with RU football. Can't say the same for players at programs with a longer history.

All great reasons j11forbes. I'm not exactly sold on the emergence of Rutgers but I am sure that out of your 6 reasons, one of them is the reason why he chose Rutgers.

xxx84xxx: They are not all escorts. Maybe 60 percent of them, but that's it.

Rutgers is not a 10 minute ride to the city its at least 1/2 hr. And what about Piscataway? Seriously its a dump compared to other college towns like Morgantown, chap hill, etc. Piscataway is 1/2 ghetto 1/2 commuter area its not really that cool. If the university was say down the jersey shore it might be nice but piscataway i dont get how any kid visits there then vistis mo town or state college pa or even the uconn campus and area is better suited for college. whatever good luck rutgers will be 3-9 next year and this kid will pass.
