Did Miami GM reveal draft direction?

In a classic and comedic moment during a 25-minute news conference Thursday, Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland made an unintended slip-up that caused quite a debate about whether he had just accidentally revealed some seriously secretive information. The question was innocent, an inquiry about how Ireland views a player's accomplishments in college compared with his upside in the future. ''Of course I want guys who have great upside -- this is the first pick in the draft,'' Ireland said. ``This guy is going to be, you hope he's a pillar of your defense for a long time. Of course you hope he's going to have upside. The economics to me . . .'' Ireland stopped mid-sentence, looking over at two reporters who were smiling about what they thought they just heard. Ireland gave the reporters a curious smirk of his own. ''Defense?'' one of the reporters said. Did he really just accidentally reveal Miami's plans to draft a defensive player, likely either Chris Long or Vernon Gholston?

Look to the nearest ICU for Parcells where he is recovering from a stroke.....lol

ha ha pretty funny stuff!

He was setting up a smoke screen. When he said the Pilar of the.....(He paused for half a second) and said Defense. He was messing around with everyone.

Loose lips sink ships and give away draft day decisions....or do they? This could be misdirection for agents and players as much as for teams. This isn't Ireland's first BBQ after all. Who knows.

Miami could use a pillar to hold up the porch on their Jed Clampit shack.

April 18, 2008  08:23 AM ET

Huh? You are going off first...or even in the first three..so what if you let it slip? Hey, I had a lowlife name but I never had anything gross like bodily functions with a prohibit sign like that guy above here. Or is that a infielder, safety or corner crouched down with a flaw in the photo? I don't know.

Outofshapeandinjured!, I believe the avatar above you is blowing smoke out his butt. I'm not sure that's a bodily function, but it is prohibited.

Who cares what the Dolphins are planning they are picking first. No one wants their pick so they have no leverage to play against trade offers.

April 18, 2008  08:36 AM ET

chris long is the real deal

April 18, 2008  08:40 AM ET

Its possible that Parcells is playing games with the Media. He coached the Giants and Jets so he knows how bad the NY media is. Regardless...Long or Gholston are not bad picks

April 18, 2008  08:41 AM ET

no he's not.

April 18, 2008  08:41 AM ET

Jake Long or Vernon Gholston.

April 18, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Get the damn draft over with.......this routine reminds me of a day time soap opera on steriods.

April 18, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Ireland is messing with the media. He's not stupid. He said "defense" on purpose and now everyone is in an uproar, yet they'll still take Jake Long.

Cardinal rule of the draft, and its been stated several times on cnnsi.com: don't believe ANYTHING you hear in the ten days leading up to the draft. As a Rams fan, I could care less what Miami does. We'll help on the Oline or Dline regardless of what the Fins do.

April 18, 2008  10:11 AM ET

Maybe it's simply a ploy to get Long (the OL Long) to take less $$$ in order to be #1 overall.

April 18, 2008  10:22 AM ET

When you go first in the draft you can say anything you want. It changes nothing.. The other 31 teams have planned for every possibility.

April 18, 2008  10:38 AM ET

If this was a bluff, it was 100% pointless (you have the #1 overall pick!)

If this was a screwup, even God can't help the Dolphins...
