Why Knicks fired Thomas

Stripped of the presidency 2 1/2 weeks ago, Isiah Thomas was fired yesterday as Knick head coach. Team president Donnie Walsh announced the move in a conference call, saying the Knicks didn't appear "motivated to try to win" during parts of the just-ended 23-59 catastrophe. Walsh said the coaching search begins immediately, adding he will interview Mark Jackson, who is the leading candidate, according to a source close to Walsh. Walsh said Thomas will remain in the organization, but didn't give him a title. Thomas, with three years and $18 million remaining on his contract, will have a vague role that Walsh found difficult to specify. Walsh said Thomas will report directly to him, and he will seek Thomas' opinion. Though Walsh said senior VP Glen Grunwald will remain to run this June's draft, the Knick prez added he wasn't sure Thomas would be invited to next month's pre-draft camp or pre-draft workouts.

Well. Good riddance! lets hope they get a decent coach now and get rid of Marbury & Curry during the summer.

At least this will mean the end of every Isiah Thomas update ... I hope

Can you be fired and still be employed at the same location?????

April 19, 2008  10:14 AM ET

It's about time.

April 19, 2008  10:46 AM ET

he's not going anywhere. they still have to pay him so they will work him in somewhere. marbury will be back too. they need his contract for it's expiration value next year. and curry's staying because no one else will have him. nothing's changed. they just put lipstick on a pig and are selling it as something new......

He caved. Isiah should have been given transportation to the airport.

"Walsh also said he would put former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy, and assistant Herb Williams, on the list of candidates. "

I like the idea of bringing back Van Gundy. Since he was fired the Knicks have been a mess.

Walsh better hire me or the Knicks will continue to suck. He should at least consult me on whom to hire

April 19, 2008  12:02 PM ET

Isn't the real question Why did it take so long?

"Why Knicks fired Thomas"

"Why Knicks fired Thomas"

Is an explanation really necessary?

April 19, 2008  02:01 PM ET

They fired him because the team is worse off now than when he took over. Anyone who argues that point is failing to look at the roster, two 59 loss seasons and no years at or above .500.

An awful roster of overpaid untradeable role players. No true starters on the roster.

Trading away 1st round picks, and essentially the reward for being a perennial sub .500 team for 1 overweight C that things "D-fence" is just the thing around his yard that he paints every summer.

Terrible President, terrible GM, and terrible coach. He tried every role and the team failed to improve with him in any of them.

And now they are saddled with contracts for players that should be coming off the bench.

Anyone who can answer the question "Why Knicks fired Isiah Thomas" in a million words or less will win a used ace bandage signed by Stephon Marbury.

April 19, 2008  02:31 PM ET

Thomas has nothing but a fool's pride. Why would a Hall of Famer want to hang around and be ridiculed the way he has been---albeit for good reason. He has made a mess of this opportunity. Move on, take your lumps and chalk it up as a bad experience----much like when Jordan and Pippin dethroned his Pistons.

April 19, 2008  04:45 PM ET

Actually he is not "fired". If Holmes still has a job with the organization - then he is not fired. You have got to remember they took that hit from the woman who got the bread for the harrassment situation. He did not get fired then....not now either. It should have been announced that Isiah is not the coach anymore - which would still make then fans of the Knicks happy to hear it in that manner.

April 19, 2008  05:45 PM ET

The only organization in the NBA worse than the Knicks is the Bulls. Now, if only Paxson would be fired....

April 19, 2008  06:11 PM ET

This is as stupid as any question could be, SI. Why ask the obvious?

Anyone that doesn't understand why Isiah was fired, wouldn't understand if you explained it to them. Isiah was probably the worse front office executive in the history of professional sports.

Why did the Knicks fire Thomas? He s*cked, that's why. Don't need a whole article to explain it. Just look at their record with him "leading" them.
