Shockey wants new role or trade

The prevailing theory regarding the Giants and Jeremy Shockey is the team learned during its Super Bowl run they no longer need the Pro Bowl tight end. Truth is, Shockey made the first move toward a separation. And he did so before the playoffs even began. Shockey told the Giants in December he wanted a changed role in the offense or a trade to another team, according to a person familiar with discussions between Shockey, the Giants' coaching staff and front office. The person said Shockey threatened to sit out the upcoming season if neither request was granted. Shockey, 27, who suffered a broken fibula in a Dec. 16 loss to the Redskins, feels his career is being cut short by all the blocking he has been asked to do since Tom Coughlin became coach of the Giants in 2004. While blocking is an integral part of a tight end's job description, Shockey believes he was more effective as a receiver under former coach Jim Fassel and offensive coordinator Sean Payton, now the coach of the Saints, who are interested in trading for Shockey.

Geez shut this guy up and trade him.

while I am never a huge fan of guys forcing trades and stuff, you have to agree with his point. This guy was considered an elite TE before Coughlin got a hold of him. Now he's stuck blocking all the time. Even going into this past season, Eli was a weak qb who could have benefitted a great deal from having a TE he could dump down to, yet Shockey never really got lined up as a receiver. I realize this guy has been a bit of a mouthpiece, and his dedication has been questioned in the past as well, but his talent can't be denied, and he IS a gamebreaker when used properly. I'd be frustrated too. I'm no fan of forcing trades, etc, but I can understand where he's coming from in this case. If the Gints are smart, they'll use him as a receiving TE this season and add that much more offense to their arsenal. Mind you, I guess their line mustn't be all that good if they always need him to block...

The problem is that Shockey doesn't want to block and feels that they way he has been used has contributed to his decline both in stats and injuries. He's probably right. Now it's being said that Shockey asked for a new role or trade before he broke his leg.

If the Giants are smart, they'll use him as they initially intended. Manning seems to want him on the team, maybe they can finally click this year. If not, they should trade him.

Shockey has to keep on finding new ways for attention doesn't he?

I don't like my job location either. Maybe I can cry to my boss until he transfers me... Wait, I would get fired if I did that. Well shucks...

Shockey will eventually end up with the Raiders. Where every malcontent and R-Tard ends up playing

Report Offensive Comment

I'd love to see him sign with the Redskins. You can't question his toughness.

Report Offensive Comment

How dare they use the TE for blocking instead of turning him into a #1 receiver. What a useless non-team player ****.

Report Offensive Comment

Shockey knows he is a tight end, right? Not a Slot Receiver.

Report Offensive Comment

Get him out of the NFC East, I'll be happy :)

He's a bit of a jerk, but he's also somewhat correct. He came out of Miami as THE TE of the draft, and the guy is one heck of a PASS-CATCHING TE. He's got an ego, and he wants to catch TDs....not block for them on running TDs.....oh well.

Report Offensive Comment

Id like to see him in Cincinnati with Carson Palmer they could use a new threat now that OCHO DOUCHO is on his way out...

Report Offensive Comment

If they cannot get fair market value then Reese will keep him. He can play. The guy owns Roy Williams, and that is the team you have to beat. He has never been a deep thinker, but he does play hard.

Shockey is Kakee.
Too many dropped passes.

Report Offensive Comment

IF it's true that he initiated this talk...I never thought I would say this: He can pack his stuff and leave...no player is bigger than the team. Let him go play for the Saints and wallow in obscurity.

Report Offensive Comment

Chances are, he will see more passes this season, with hedgecock being a great blocker. but, I have a feeling that jeremy would also like some more money in his pocket, like he would get in a trade and contract extension/ restructure.
The giants have him at 2.5 mil., and if history remains consistant and he fails to play 16 games again, while being used often as a blocker, his market value would take a major hit by next season.
So... Do the gnts get the most they can for a guy that has a problem staying on the field, or do they use him whenever/however they can to win games this year ? I say the later, and just like strahan, if the guy makes a full season and becomes a total team player THEN give the guy some coin for his effort.

Just trade him. If someone's going to whine because they have to actually block a little bit, just get rid of him. Trade him to the highest bidder, and draft another TE, maybe JerMichael Finley in the second or third round.

Report Offensive Comment

He has a point, and there is a reason the Saints are the team aggressively seeking him in a trade. Payton knew how to use him, shifting him out from the line into the slot often.

Shockey has become a real good blocker and Coughlin does use his TEs as blockers more than receivers but he needs to realize what kind of a weapon he has. While Shockey has still put up good numbers under Coughlin he is not going to be the weapon he can be when you expect him to do 95% of his routes from the down position. Gilbride and Coughlin need to shift him more and Shockey will be happy, AND Eli will have a better and happier Shockey.

Report Offensive Comment

you can't blame him for saying this. he used to be one of the best tight ends in the league, but since coughlin got there he has not been. trade him somewhere will he will get the catches he should (in other words, do his job)

Report Offensive Comment

Mental ray youd like to see him with the Redskins, do you not realize we have great talent there with COOLEY. One of the better tight ends in the game esp after the catch.
