Saban dislikes recruting rule

Alabama coach Nick Saban is very much a hands-on recruiter. So he does not like the new rule that prohibits head coaches from visiting high schools during the May recruiting period. The change was put into place because it was becoming more difficult to enforce the rules that kept head coaches from having direct contact with the recruits. Head coaches could "bump" into the recruit during the visit but they could not carry on a conversation. "It's ridiculous that we're doing what we're doing," Saban said. "We put ourselves at a tremendous disadvantage." Saban was asked this new rule was directed at him. Saban is known in coaching circles as a very aggressive recruiter. "I'd rather not answer that," he said. "Everybody can draw their own conclusions."

Give me a break Saban. You're in the SEC. Your athletic department has already come up with the plan on how to get around this rule, and you'll be going about it in 3 weeks. Just keep your mouth shut and keep up the SEC "If yall ain't cheating, y'all ain't trying" doctrine.

I can never decide who is more dysfunctional. The NCAA or the Federal Government.

Saban doesn't like any rule that he didn't make. In other words, he doesn't like rules, or he believes that he should only have to follow the rules he feels like following.

This guy is an a--hole.

"Saban doesn't like any rule that he didn't make. In other words, he doesn't like rules, or he believes that he should only have to follow the rules he feels like following. "

Wow. That's rich coming from a Buckeye fan. What's Maurice Clarett up to these days. I assume answering the phone isn't one of them.
The fact is that Saban out-works everyone in recruiting. Several SEC coaches pushed for this rule so they could keep up with their golf games in the Spring as opposed to recruiting as well as Saban. I would think even an LSU fan
could admit that.

Conclusion drawn! (in case you didn't pick up the subtlety, I'm insinuating that he knows the rule was made b/c of him).

What does Saban mean by "We put ourselves at a tremendous disadvantage"? If everyone is doing it, then it is no way biased towards certain teams.

I wonder if Bama fans will hate Saban as much as LSU and Dolphin fans? Probably.

Maurice Clarett? Is that really all you got? Have you read anything recent, or are you still scouring S.I. issues from six years ago?

April 19, 2008  07:47 PM ET

I agree with Saban on this one. It is a bad rule.

April 19, 2008  09:06 PM ET

OK forget about Maurice Clarett. How about the fact that OSU is 0-9 against the SEC in bowl games!!! OSU s-cks and did not have any business being on the BCS Title game. Also, what kind of coach wears a sweater vest??

April 19, 2008  09:20 PM ET

Nick Saban one letter away from Nick Satan.... Coincadence? ... I don't think so.

April 19, 2008  09:22 PM ET

I meant to say Coincidence

April 20, 2008  12:09 AM ET

The rules put in place are stupid anyways. Recruiting should happen at games or visits to the recruits home or a official or unofficial visits. And as for OSU being in the BCS two years in a row, I don't like it not because they weren't worthy but because I don't like the BCS. If people want to **** to the federal government because our team wasn't given a chance they should shut up anyways. Hawaii lost to Georgia 41-10 in the Sugar Bowl. If they want to **** then they should do one of two things: 1. play a better non-conference schedule. 2. Petition for a Playoff. The latter would be my choice.

April 20, 2008  08:42 AM ET

If everyone has to follow the rule (dumb or not) it does not make it unfair. If a coach is not to speak to a recruit, why would they "really" go to the recuit's high school? I think the essence of this rule speaks for itself.

April 20, 2008  09:01 AM ET

BAMAFAN::Mike Ditka also wore a sweater vest, so lets give Tressel an alibi for trying. Is any of this garbage about recruiting going to matter when the Tide hoist our TWELFTH natonal title? In the business world, headhunters target the best and brightest for their companies, BAMA has to keep up with USC, Hawaii, Florida, etc as destinations for their recruits who are interested in beaches, bit****, and parties, or worse, Auburn U. Its tough to commit to live and work in Tuscaloosa. I know, I'm sitting here and it's kinda ghetto and boring. Saban is doing a great job bringing in who needs to be brought in, which are MOSTLY in-state guys and just a few from surrounding states, maybe one Yankee.

April 20, 2008  07:43 PM ET

Keep in mind now Bama fans the only reason you had such a great recruiting class was because you had a great in state crop, now this year LSU has a great in state crop so they'll have a great class
