Why Rays broke bank for Longoria
The deal, which had been under discussion since March, was announced Friday, hours before his seventh major-league game, but would have been consummated, both parties said, even if he hadn't been called up yet from Triple A. The Rays made the deal, essentially, because they could. They project Longoria, 22, to be a star, and doing the deal -- and doing it sooner rather than later -- gives them cost certainty over what he will make during his arbitration years, extends their control through what likely will be his first two years of free agency, and could save them millions if he is as good as expected.

Stop it already with the small market/big market thing already. Read the report for MLB profits last year. The Twins owner ( who would not pay for Santana ) pocketed more money than the owners of either the Red Sox or the Yankees. He is a billionaire and decided to add another 40+ million to his account... The guaranteed revenue and money sharing makes them all richer. Some owners put the money back in their team, and a lot of them just put it in their pocket..Their choice..

If the Rays were talking of signing Longoria to a 6 year deal in March, then why did they send him down at the beginning of the season? That move made no sense - but this signing makes tremendous sense. Two years before this contract expires, when Longoria is an All-Star, the Rays should rework his deal for another 6 years.
Imagine in 2005 when schools on the west coast had to deal with Longoria and Troy Tulowitzki in the same Long Beach State lineup day after day.

This was a very smart. Why wait to pay him Carl Crawford-like money? It's not even a gamble for 6 years @ 17 million; bargain for Rays.

This won't work when, in a couple of years, Longoria threatens to sit out unless the Rays rework his contract and of course like all the other "****" teams they will rework it !!!

The Rays did NOT break the bank for Evan Longoria. $17.5 M over 6 years... that's dirt cheap for somebody projected to be such a big star in the league. Imagine this: in three or four years, a mediocre MLB player will be earning something like $10 M a year, while star third baseman Evan Longoria will be locked up for much less. Such a win/win for Tampa Bay and Longoria.

If he stinks he will take the money and run, If he becomes a good player he will force a trade in a few years over a new contract. Win win for the player..
