Weis: QB duel hurt Notre Dame

The presence of Jimmy Clausen -- or, more accurately, the presence of only Jimmy Clausen -- is allowing Charlie Weis to breathe easier heading into the summer. For all the protests along the way, apparently the four-way duel for the quarterback spot a year ago was indeed as nutty and tiresome as it seemed. "At this point last year I knew that in a couple days (Clausen) was going to go get his elbow scoped," Weis said. "And it was going to be a while before he could get his arm strength up. That whole quarterback situation was a bit chaotic at the time, I'd have to say. Nothing was really going as I scripted it. Whether it was Jimmy or the rest of the guys."

Yep. That was apparent last year. It didn't help that Clausen was hurt and DD was in a bad system for him, either.

It was apparent that Notre Dame wasn't very good, and frankly Claussen didn't impress. Weiss also came across as egotistical and overrated. We'll see if his celebrated recruiting classes come through. Brady Quinn was a Willingham guy.

Will the overrated "boxer"/safety get drafted?

willingham got nothing out of brady. he owes all his success to weis

Charlie, you don't say things like this, buddy. This kind of thing tends to make fans lose confidence in your organizational and leadership abilities. Now, the farm is bet on your one QB. With behavior like this, we're going to start calling you "Goodbye Charlie."

Jimmy doesn't like competing for playing time. Jimmy is a star. Jimmy is the QB. Jimmy will win one for the 'Gipper".

Shouldn't Weis ask the Pope? The guy is in New York right now.

April 20, 2008  12:16 PM ET

They should have done an article on Cierre Wood and Tyler Stockton commiting yesterday. Last year really hasn't had a big effect on recruiting, which leads me to imagine what the class could have been if we were 9-3 instead of 3-9 last year.

April 20, 2008  12:18 PM ET

The players were impressive yesterday, especially the sophomores. Hughes and Harrison Smith looked like All-Americans, and Armando Allen broke some tackles. I'd say 7-5 or 8-4 next year. No way we finish under .500 this year.

April 20, 2008  12:33 PM ET

i 'm guessing somehow this is still Willingham's fault right?

Errr, right?

April 20, 2008  12:51 PM ET

IRishr#1,

You are right. Statistics show that spring games are good predictions of how a team is going to do during the season. I am betting that ND goes 10-2 losing to MSU and USC. Yes, losing to MSU but beating UM.

Watch for a lot of incoming freshmen to make a big contribution.

April 20, 2008  01:14 PM ET

I think ND will lose to Michigan State, Pitt, USC, and either Purdue or Boston College. The worst possible outcome is 6-6 and the best possible is 10-2. The schedule is very favorable this year.

April 20, 2008  01:19 PM ET

I can't stand Notre Dame, but as long as Weis is their coach and they suck, he's my favorite coach !

April 20, 2008  01:20 PM ET

Warden, thanks for the vote, but only time will tell if the Irish have "grown" from last years troubles.

Bandit - Yeah, everything is Willingham's fault! NO, I'd say it's more Kevin White's fault more than anyone else. He's the AD.
He made Boob Davie head coach, then made Ty head coach. Both of these guys couldn't get the job done.

GO IRISH!!

April 20, 2008  01:43 PM ET

NewsFlash here... The incoming freshmen HAVE to contribute... Seeing as they absolutely stunk last year... And the words All American... And Spring... Should never be put in the same sentence... Weis has a huge ego... But his coaching so far has been a bust... If he doesn't get things turned around.. Quickly... He will find himself... Back in Coordinator Land

The Irish will be lucky to hit the .500 mark considering they aren't playing all of the US armed forces this year (they only play the Navy). They will most likely lose to Michigan (which people think is going to suck because of the talent they lost, but I think that will be a farce considering the hidden talent at Ann Arbor since Carr prefers to play his veterans), USC (Loss)...MSU (only because MSU starts well and then collapses, ND should have scheduled this game towards the end of the season), Washington (loss), Pittsburg (Loss), BC (Loss), Navy (Win), Syracuse (Win), Purdue (Win)... Stanford (Toss uP), UNC (TOss Up),
