Urlacher driving locker room wedge

People who doubt Brian Urlacher's influence in the locker room are ignoring the teammates who are following his lead by seeking new contracts. They also overlook the wedge being driven between players and management by Urlacher's impasse evident at a recent workout when a Bears veteran loudly pleaded with coach Lovie Smith for the team just to pay the linebacker, according to a teammate.

Frankly this is the last thing the Bears need right now. We cant have guys playing selfish football, especially the two anchors of our defense, Urlacher and Briggs

I tell you these guys are making my offseason a living hell

April 20, 2008  08:43 AM ET

guess he really didn't mean for all those years on the contract to be for reals. didn't you know he had his fingers crossed so it's ok. wonder if the team can negoiate to lower a plyers salery when he has a bad year.

April 20, 2008  08:58 AM ET

they need to make up their mind. Is he using a driver or a wedge? Honestly I don't know how these journalists in Chicago do it. Must be the Mariotti factor.

"Urlacher gives locker room wedgie"

..corrected headline.

April 20, 2008  10:07 AM ET

Hard to believe a year ago the Bears were considered a strong contender and close to being the best in the NFL.

April 20, 2008  10:26 AM ET

Maybe I'm missing something. I've watched football since I was 6 or 7 yrs old about 38 years. Urlacher to me is one of the most overrated players I have seen in that time period. He's had one or two good years the rest of the time he is nicked up and hurt. Butkus or Singletary he's not. This has nothing to do with this but I would like to see Singletary get a shot as a head coach in the NFL.

April 20, 2008  10:36 AM ET

I dont know anyone who hits as hard as Urlacher. I am not a Bears fan, but when I see a huge running back like Action Jackson from the Rams completely turn in the opposite direction because he is scared of getting hit by this guy, that says something! He might be money hungary, but who isnt. Back when Butkus played there wasnt any pay day. Now you have billions of dollars in sports entertainment. If the NFL allows these guys to make this money and fans continue to spend then I have no problem with players pushing the envelope. I would be doing the same thing. I work to make money, and I am sure every other red blooded american does the same.

April 20, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Ahh, the Urlacher du jour. At least it's no longer Pacman Jones.

April 20, 2008  11:42 AM ET

Note to all NFL players. Just sign 1 year contracts!! When you have a good season, your pay will go up,. When you have bad seasons, your pay will go down. See how this works.

April 20, 2008  11:48 AM ET

No self-respecting sports agent would allow a client to sign that kind of deal, Mental Ray. There are self-respecting sports agents out there, aren't there?

April 20, 2008  11:54 AM ET

This is all talk: a poorly premised and poorly written article by a guy trying to generate print for the weekend.

Case in point: "People who doubt Brian Urlacher's influence in the locker room are ignoring the teammates who are following his lead by seeking new contracts."

Teammates are seeking new contracts BECAUSE THEY WANT TO MAKE MORE MONEY, IDIOT.

April 20, 2008  12:00 PM ET

Ahhh Agents... Who is killing the game more than good ol' Agents???

April 20, 2008  12:03 PM ET

Seems every offseason teams like the Bears and Bengals have player issues. On the cover you see minority head coachs, but then after opening the book, it reveals management and ownership are at the root of chaos

April 20, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Waaaaaaah. Urlacher is a big baby. I understand that people work hard in order to get a raise. But you can't get a raise when your team finishes under .500, you get hurt, didn't make the pro bowl so what kind of money do you want? You are now in your thirties and have become a risk. Just accept the fact that you are quickly fading out of the NFL. LOFA TATUPU is the new and improved NFL Middle Line Backer. You are a has been. Holla.

April 20, 2008  12:10 PM ET

GIVE ME MY MONEY OR I'LL DRIVE THAT WEDGE UP YOUR ASS !!!

April 20, 2008  01:49 PM ET

if they dont want him their are plenty of teams that will trade for him and pay him what he wants .. That man has been a leader on that team for years and deserves to be paid i mean how can u call the man a baby for wanted to get what he DESERVES i think the people who call him a baby are jealous point blank ..

I'm with ya on this, and others "selfish" baby.
Save some $$ trade him, for players,
cash and draft picks!

April 20, 2008  02:42 PM ET

It seems to me the Bears are the third best team in their own division and going down. Still no QB or RB or WR that scare anybody. A defense that looks better on paper than on the field. It just might be time for them to do the whole team over. Sounds like a lousy locker room of selfish individuals to me...

April 20, 2008  03:23 PM ET

Bears should trade Urlacher to Washington. You know they'd overpay for him.

April 20, 2008  03:23 PM ET

ztuner,

"I dont know anyone who hits as hard as Urlacher."

Ever hear of Jerome Bettis?

"but when I see a huge running back like Action Jackson from the Rams completely turn in the opposite direction ..."

Bettis ... went .. forward.

Over Urlacher.

(Sorry Tommy and Urlacher54 ... I had to get that in.)

Then again, the Bus couldn't walk up the stairs for 3 days after a Sunday game.

Anyway, I wouldn't knock the Bears for this "distraction" too much. Remember the Lovie and Briggs contract situations that were supposed to be so detrimental to the team's chemistry and upcoming season?

They both worked out fine in the end.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens, but the Bears (amazingly, considering who's in charge of the finances over there at Hallas Hall) have a pretty good track record of conflict resolution so far!
