White thrives in new WVU offense

All around the West Virginia spring football game yesterday, the buzz word was "progression." The progression of first-year head coach Bill Stewart, who took over after a messy divorce from former coach Rich Rodriguez. The progression of the defense as a cohesive unit. But, perhaps most important was the progression of the offense from its former run-heavy tendencies to a balanced attack behind quarterback Pat White. In front of about 18,000 fans, White showed flashes that he has transformed from a track man in some football pads into a polished quarterback. He completed 12 of 16 passes for 133 yards and one touchdown in limited work, and the offense outscored the defense, 59-15, in a game using a modified scoring system.

See WVU fans, you can rejoice! Stewart has done what RR couldn't and has made Pat White a better over all QB. All has not been lost! See, you should now be very happy that RR left your school as he was stunting the growth of the football team. Now go focus on YOUR beloved team instead of UM. Let us learn to despise RR so that we can then come back and tell you, "you were right" and then proceed to steal Stewart from WVU after we fire RR! :P

I am not a WV fan... But with all the crap with PayRod... And how much flak Stewart has caught for supposedly not being the right guy... I am hoping WV has a terrific year.... Good luck

Pat White will win the Heisman Trophy and WVU will lose one game.. to their rival Pitt again.. and all will be good in Morgantown as they win their bcs bowl game

pfft - just one loss? This isn't the year they get past USF, either.

**** u warden

59-15! Sounds like the defense was a "cohesive unit". They will lose several games if they the defense plays like that in regular season.

I did like RR at one time but, I think I can enjoy a game without 70% of the plays being bubble screens. Go WVU and OSU!

April 21, 2008  07:40 AM ET

I may be in a small group of WVU fans that are truely glad Dick Fraudriguez left and was glad for all the right reasons! He can take his 6 plays (3 bubble screens, 2 draw plays, and a straight run) and see how much the Maize and Blue will tolerate his arrogant play calling when they win 4 games this year. Stewart is a stand up guy and for once college football has a good guy who is getting his shot to show that nice guys don't finish last. Pat White and Bill Stewart hopefully will make us realize you don't need Pac-Man Jones, Dick Fraudriguez and Chris Henry types to make a great football team! LETS GO.....MOUNATAINEERS!

Rich Who?

April 21, 2008  09:48 AM ET

I am so sick and tired of these things: West Virginia, Rich Rodriguez, and Bill Stewart. Enough is Enough!!!!!!!!!

WVU will be just fine in the coming year. Patrick White, a great leader. Bill Stewart, soon-to-be a great coach.
Great coaching staff, good recruits, the best fans.

April 21, 2008  02:51 PM ET

The staff Coach Stew has assembled is better than the one that left. He's also looking for input from his assistants...what a novel idea. Hey Warden, RR is ALL YOURS BIG BOY.

April 21, 2008  03:13 PM ET

WVU has looked good for most of the Spring. They have some great talent coming back. My only concern was our secondary and it still is. Our offense can score 50pts a game. I just hope our defense can stop teams from scoring 51. I know our defense will be faster than in the past, but we will also have several new members to that squad. Our success will be determined by our defense

Too bad Michigan is too chicken$*&% to schedule real out of conference teams, watching WVU wipe the field with Michigan would be fun. Just wait though, when Michigan is 4 and 8 at seasons end and 09 becomes Big Ten title or else (DickRod will never win one) and UM fans are lining up to throw themselves off the Ambassador Bridge, all will be well with the world.

April 21, 2008  08:27 PM ET

If you look at all the losses for WVU over the last two years you will see that #1. Pat White was either out or playing hurt and #2 and more important Rodriguez did not modify his game plan on the fly to take advantage of the personnel he had on the field. In the USF game this year, if RR had run Schmidt, Slaton and Devine and stopped trying to use the backup like Pat White then WVU would have won. They barely lost even with the poor play calling. The Pitt game is another fine example. Bad weather, rivalry game and RR calls the same 6-8 plays the ENTIRE GAME. You can't tell me that the Eers were so bad that they lost to Pitt and USF because those teams are better overall. Just as soon as RR leaves and the new coaching staff starts prepping them, they go out and KILL an OSU team that was very good all year long. Now,WVU will continue to have a good offense this year, but as was previously mentioned, that defense had better get better very quick.

And Warden, most folks outside of the University who are over the age of 15 and enjoy an IQ of over 25 don't care about RR anyways. I never did like his schemes, his ego or his Me boss, University My Servant type attitude.

Just to be clear KDB --> the Gold and Blue scrimmage was situational. Therefore, the score is meaningless especially when the O starts on the D's 10, the least they got was a FG while the D would get 1 point if they made the O go 3 and out.

Got it? Not a game but a situational scrimmage!

I got it, but I just don't care. I still say that is a lot of points to give up. Any opposing team on the schedule has to feel good about their chances in the red zone. And, just to even out some of the looney comments hoping UM does horrible this year, I hope WVU loses every game. I don't even care about Stewart any more.
