Mets rip 'weird' Phillies fans
A day later, the Mets were still furious with the fans at Citizens Bank Park for celebrating Jose Reyes' apparent head injury. Much to the dismay of Willie Randolph and Mets closer Billy Wagner, among others, the fans loudly cheered when Reyes collided with the knee of Phillies second baseman Chase Utley in the third inning Friday. Reyes, who writhed on the ground in pain for several moments, said he blacked out briefly but convinced the Mets to let him stay in the game. "We live in a culture where the fans are that way, where they love to hate," Randolph said yesterday. "It's just sad, it really is. The guy could have really been hurt. But we've seen that before. It's a weird culture we live in." Wagner, a former Phillie, who is booed every time he pitches here, was even more critical of the fans in a city that once cheered former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin's career-ending neck injury.

This is absolutely no surprise to any intelligent human being who has ever attended a sporting event in Philadelphia. The display I saw at a Phillies-Padres game last summer left me sick. It would be unfair of course to label all Phillies fans this way. But what my wife and I witnessed there last summer, sitting in left field listening to the racial insults being thrown at Milton Bradley (who refrained from any reactions) was like nothing I have ever witnessed at a public venue before. These were ignorant, angry, individuals who are seriously lacking something in their own lives (living in southwestern New Jersey suburbs probably doesn't help).
It reminds me of the movie, Idiocracy.

That's what you're going to hear up in the cheap seats. Just like the 700 level at the old vet stadium.

Sometimes when someone is seriously injured it isnt funny...what if he had head trauma and died (for some unkown reason). It would be like walking into a hospital and laughing and at all the people in there.
Now that is extreme, but I saw the play, and some damage could have been done to his mental state.

I could understand it if it was A-Rod, though. Or even Jeter, Giambi, Damon, Ortiz, Rameriez, or any other Yankee/red sox player.

if you look at the replay, he was out. now for the fans, so what! they booed Santa Clause, hureled racist comments at Dick Allen and called him a drunk, booed Mike Schmidt for nearly his entire career....So what! Play ball and shut up, you won 3 straight. If you want to get back at the fans in Philly, beat the Phillies, otherwise, shut up. It's a long season guys so as I am doing with the O's, enjoy it while it lasts.

You might want to get your head checked...That has got to be one of the worst posts I have ever read. To wish harm on an individual only states the case that SOME Philly fans are wierd. You sir are the moron here...

I was in Baltimore last night to watch the O's hammer the Yanks. I sat in section 7 row M seat 5 and I was surrounded by NY fans. I had my 7-year old son with me and my wife, in front of me sat two kids no loker that 5 and 7 with their parents, next to them sat four or five Yankee fans who seemed like nice guys but as they got more and more drunk, the "F" word came out of their mouths in spite of the fact that there were several little kids within 5 feet of them. Does this make all Yankee fans ****? Get a life and as Don Henley said "get over it." I dealt with it like a man so do the same.

phillyfool27: 1. Your comments only strengthen what the other comments here are saying about Phillies fans. Do you realize that? Do you not even care? 2. Much of the Phillies of fanbase is actually from New Jersey (southwestern Jersey). Have you noticed that large tract of land across the river?

You all need to wake up and realize that these guys are human beings here. It's one thing to boo visiting players. It's quite another to revel in their physical pain. I boo Jimmy Rollins out of the respect I have for his ability and his performance last year. I have a TON of respect for Jimmy Rollins, and for John Smoltz, Chipper Jones, et. al. But I would NEVER cheer if one of them got injured. These guys are every bit as human as you and me and to treat them like that is downright evil. (But should we really expect anything less from Philadelphia??)

I've been a lifelong Philly sports fan. I happen to live in South Jersey. I would guess the fanbase is around 50/50 NJ - Pa., not really sure. Been through a lot of rough years, but, supporting them win or lose is what a real fan is. I know the fans are known to be "passionate, idiotic, moronic, disgusting, classless, and just plain stupid". Well, obviously not all fans fit these descriptions. I tend to be one of the "passionate" fans. I am embarrassed when some act inhuman. I cannot control them. But for the life of me I don't know what makes them the way they are.
