Brunnstrom to pick team soon

Posted: Monday April 21, 2008 06:32AM ET

The Maple Leafs should learn soon whether they have won the Fabian Brunnstrom sweepstakes. The 23-year-old Brunnstrom is a late bloomer. He had nine goals and 28 assists in 54 games this season as a rookie with Farjestads of the Swedish Elite League. At 6-foot-1, 203 pounds, Brunnstrom has drawn comparisons to various forwards, including Marian Hossa and Daniel Alfredsson. Other clubs that have been hot on Brunnstrom's tail include the Red Wings and the Canucks. The Canucks were the frontrunners but that changed when general manager Dave Nonis was fired last week.

It's Not!

He will end up as a Red Wing.

When did the Leafs come into the picture? Are they just thrown into the story because Toronto's captain is a Sweed? Oh wait, this is a Toronto Sun article! I guess it's a slow news day in Toronto since there's no transit strike. Go back to sleep Leaf fans, it's just a dream.

Its a matter of how much ice time he really wants. They said after Nonis was fired that the Wings were probably the frontrunners for his services, but a short time after that I remember hearing that he was concerned about what role/how much ice time he would get on a relatively stacked Wings team. I sure hope he comes to the Wings, a team can always use good players, but I am just not sure. I wanna see him play with the big boys though, and see if he really is the big deal they have been making him out to be.

Correction: Swede. My apologies to our Swedish friends.

He'll go to the Wings

Report Offensive Comment

Forget it, Leafs fans! He ain't old enough to play for the Leafs! Give him another decade or so.

Report Offensive Comment

Hahahahaha. The Vancouver organization has egg all over their face now. Couldnt they wait another month? I hope he goes to anywhere but Vancouver. Hahahahahaha.

Report Offensive Comment

He'll go to the Red Wings, unless Lidstrom goes back to Sweden. There's no way the Laffs can pull this off. And if they did, he'd end up sucking.

Report Offensive Comment

I wonder if the Leafs are going to guarantee a playoff berth again next year, like they did this year. Toronto brass are so hoping nobody remembered that.

Report Offensive Comment

everyone remembers that guarantee...thast why the leafs are a joke right now
if only thta management would get their greedy hands out of the GM job
still cant believe they turned down scotty bowman...real smart

Report Offensive Comment

So why pretell my esteemed and knowledgable homers....Exactly why Brunnstrom would not choose Toronto? He ruled out Vancouver, he does not like the idea of trying to crack a Detroit lineup.
Believe it or not, the Leafs will be very diligent this off season and next re-building a team. They have the spotlight and the money. Soon they will have a new President who will be able to act autonomosly. So...laugh now...but be forewarned...the Leafs of old...are not going to be the Leafs of the Future. Bet they make a play for Malone too.

Report Offensive Comment

Is the fact that he's 23 somehow allow him to avoid the draft?

Report Offensive Comment

Baun-ded, I have a question for you...Exactly why Would he choose Toronto?
Have they proven that they're a team on the rise? Of course they're going to be diligent in re-building...they have no choice. Just becasue you try doesn't mean it will happen. What makes you think that anyone they bring in will not be a puppet of the ownership? They wouldn't give Scotty Bowman full control, who else is going to get it? I'm not saying it can't happen but as a Leaf fan, what over the last 5 years tells you this time is going to be different?

Report Offensive Comment

I'm not sure if it's his age, or the fact that he's playing pro over there right now, sports fan, but he's clearly being treated like a free agent

Report Offensive Comment

Well shakey...watch and see what happens this summer...The guy they bring in will have control. Trust me. The nameless and faceless board have had enough of getting in the spotlight. The Leafs will follow the Raptor's example. Pure and simple.

Report Offensive Comment

Hmm, well Ovechkin and others played in the Pro Russian-Elite League, and I believe players like the Nicklas Backstroms's and Tommo Ruttu's , etc. played in the Finnish Elite Leage (TPS?) and they all went in the draft.

However, Niklas Backstrom was not drafted. I'm sticking with my age theory I guess. :S

I'm getting worried about Peter...
I hope he isn't still out there, "thinkin".

Baun-ded:
I'm not so sure the Leafs want to follow the Raptors example. Have you seen the Raptors play lately? And that's with Bosch in the lineup.

Report Offensive Comment

If the kid has any Brains, he will play anywhere BUT TORONTO
