Vikings, Chiefs working on deal
Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen and his agent left the Twin Cities on Sunday after a two-day visit, but that doesn't mean the Vikings have given up on a trade. The challenge will be working out a deal with the Chiefs, who have been evasive about their plans for their disgruntled franchise player but surely must realize that they aren't going to be able to sign him to a long-term deal. In full rebuilding mode after a 4-12 season, the Chiefs need as many draft choices as they can get and the Vikings have nine in this weekend's draft, including two each in the third and sixth rounds. That's four more picks than belong to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the other contender in this two-horse race, who will bring Allen in for a visit this week.

Minnesota needs to get something done here. I'm not saying that they should completely cave and give the Chiefs 2 first round picks, but you're going to draft an End in the first round, so you may as well give that pick up for a proven End, and not a 1st round bust like Udeze and James.

Hoffa, you hit it right on the spot. They need a PRO BOWL caliber starter that will produce right away.

why the bengals aren't at least talking to the chiefs, is beyond me.

The Bengals can talk to the Chiefs but in the end it's up to Allen. He can say he won't sign a long-term contract with them and then they'll be out of luck..

His agent as well as Edwards are trying to do a Johan Santana and see what they can get. Nobody will offer what the Vikes can and will. He will be signed shortly.

The Vikings might as well trade this year's first round pick and some lesser picks to get this guy. I don't see anyone in the draft who is going to help them out more than Allen. Just pull the trigger Vikes!!

I believe this deal does get done. But the two teams may not announce the trade until after the Chiefs 5th pick in the first round on draft day. Why? The Chiefs desperately need a Left Tackle but they also really really want QB Matt Ryan because they're not sold on Brodie Croyle. If they announce the trade now, that gives the Ravens ample time to work a trade with the the Falcons or Raiders to move up and take Ryan ahead of the Chiefs. I believe the reason the Chiefs want to make this trade is so they can take Ryan with the 5th pick and a Left tackle with the Vikings 17th pick. If this trade does NOT get done, the Chiefs know they MUST take a Left tackle early

What I find ridiculous is the fact that IF the Vikings chose to trade up in the draft to go after Long or Ghoulston, they would have to give up (according to that wonderful little point chart) their first, second and both thirds just to trade up to the number 5 slot where the Chiefs now sit. So not only would they be giving up more picks to trade up, they would be doing so for an unproven commodity.

Actually jbuck, Jared Allen is a pretty proven commodity. I can't wait to get this guy out of the division. Lord knows that's the last thing we need is one more crazy d-lineman trying to kill Cutler. The Vikes need to trade for Allen and then get a QB. Unfortunately for them, there isn't much at that position this year. Nobody in Minnesota can seriously tell me that they think Tarvaris Jackson is the future.

I think what jbuck was saying is that to trade up in the draft we'd have to give up more and get someone who is unknown than if we gave up a couple picks for Allen and know what we're getting.
As for Jackson, I am seriously telling you that I think he has potential. Do I think he's the next coming of Montana, Marino, or Favre? No. Certainly not. But do I think he could be another McNair or Cunningham. A good journeyman that throws a ton for a long time. Do I think he'll ever be H of Fame worthy? No. Certainly not. But Hall of Really Good? He certainly has the potential. If the coaching staff continues to groom him well and gets him a decent receiving corps, that is.

what difference would he make to the bengals defense? it sucks like the rest of the team. the ONLY thing they have is carson palmer and #84, as loud mouth #85 is on his way out....

wtnelson... I meant if they were to draft a DE, THAT DE would be an unproven commodity. Side note... I am all for crazy D-linemen trying to kill Cutler. Go Chiefs!
As a Chiefs fan, I know that Allen is gone either this year or next. We are rebuilding anyway and may as well get draft picks in exchange for Allen while we can. The Vikings would be friggin scary along that D-line with Allen. his is a good trade for both teams. The Vikes would get a pro-bowler next to the two Williams. Chiefs get the Vikes 1st and both thirds.

I only have one question about all this trade talk. If Allen is as good as reported then why are the Chiefs so willing to trade him ??? I don't understand.

kaycee,
because he will be on his third strike if he goes back to his party-ing ways. It make a diff. when you pay a guy upto 30 mils in sure money and he's 1 strike from being suspended for a year (not saying he will). But that's the risk for Allen. I would love to keep the guys as a Chief, but to have that risk following the kind of money Allen is asking for is too much for franchise to take. Especially know that M. Vick got to keep all his signing bonuses with this deal.

Allen said. "I can go to a team that is competing for a championship right now.."
Huh? Who the hell is he talking about? The Vikings? They did show spunk last year and didn't roll over after a crappy start. But they have so many holes (QB, WR, B-Backs) that one player isn't going to take them to the next level. Forget the head case. Keep the draft picks.
