Redskins want to trade down

The Redskins are among the teams considering making trades to change their draft position. The Redskins hold the 21st pick in the April 26-27 draft, and they are expected to discuss trading down if the top players on their draft board have been selected when they are scheduled to pick. Washington has needs along the offensive and defensive lines, at wide receiver, cornerback and safety. The Redskins also plan to select a No. 3 quarterback behind starter Jason Campbell and backup Todd Collins.

You don't see to many stories about teams wanting to trade up though.....

Until the NFL sorts out this rookie-contract mess the draft will be a broken system.

I love how this story is written...."Washington has needs along the offensive and defensive lines, at wide receiver, cornerback, and safety".

And then it goes on to say they need a 3rd qb. What the heck don't they need then? The Washington Post could have said the same thing with less had they simply phrased it:

"The Washington Redskins are -asse'd- out. They really need a little of everything"

what team doesnt want to trade down. better yet, name any teams that have said they want to trade up in this draft?

April 21, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Too bad there isn't a base-pay in this league for rookies. Prove yourself and THEN ask for the big bucks.

April 21, 2008  11:18 AM ET

The saints are rumored to want to move up.

April 21, 2008  11:22 AM ET

I think the league should be scheduled like this. 100% of the rookies' contracts are guaranteed, from the top to the bottom. But their are no negotiations, so it is structured like the NBA, and they are slotted their amount of money based on where they were picked.

If a player doesn't work out, and you cut them, the remaining money on their contract doesn't count against the cap.

Players have some security, teams don't have to deal with holdouts, agents get screwed, and it still provides some flexibility and doesn't outright kill a teams cap if they make a huge mistake at the top of the draft.

April 21, 2008  11:24 AM ET

Also, with the slotting, the guaranteed money wouldn't be prohibative since it will balance out with the overall cost.

Ergo, a 1st round 22nd pick, overall cost would actually equal the cost of a 1st round 28th pick plus a 3rd rounder.

Trade down!! It makes for a boring draft day, but it makes sense. Hopefully find a sleeper in the later rounds.

Go Skins!

April 21, 2008  12:47 PM ET

The Redskins name is very offensive!!!!

April 21, 2008  01:01 PM ET

Ihateobama,
Am I sensing a color thing here.... First Obama, now the Redskins....Whats next White Supremes..probably not....

April 21, 2008  01:06 PM ET

Actually I heard a report the Redskins were trying to move up to the fourth spot. Then you can say they are the "forskins" !!!

April 21, 2008  01:32 PM ET

It's funny.........People who say the Redskins name is offensive...which it may or may not be.....I don't really care...but....there was a group trying to make a point, by forming an intramural Basketball team named

"The Fighting Whities".

Their Icon is a 50's era Caucasian smiling at ya...like you ow him money or something.

They expected it to incite anger...so that they can prove their point with the hypocrisy of that anger...instead people in general LOVED the name. They make allot of money selling "Fighting Whities" memorabilia.

Personally....as an American with a full blood Latino background...I wouldn't mind a sport team with a cool name like that....

But I am afraid....that "The Fighting Brownies"

Doesn't sound as fierce as a Sport Team may like.

This move probably makes sense for the skins. While they do need help in several areas and probably most specifically Wideout , D-Line and Safety I don't think there is anyone they can draft at that spot that is worth the pick that they can't draft later on in the 2nd or 3rd round. The post might make it sound like the Skins have a bunch of holes but really besides Receiver I think they are fairly deep in alot of areas. They already have 9 picks in this draft and if they can get another one and move up I think they will help thier depth in all areas for the next couple of years.

April 21, 2008  02:04 PM ET

Footmodel, the Skins don't need much help at the Safety position as they do the Cornerback position. If Rogers isn't healthy and ready to go Week 1, and it appears that it he won't be, then that leaves the Skins with Springs and Smoot and not much else behind them. Safety is set with Landry and Doughty, the team just needs to find some depth to back up both of them since Fox is the only other safety on the team currently. I would love to see the Skins trade down from #21, if Braden Albert is not available and it seems he won't be, and get a 2nd and 3rd round pick for the 21st pick. However, you have to have a team that wants to trade up into the 1st round, and I don't know if there is a team besides possibly Atlanta depending on who they select with the 3rd pick. There is also possibly Baltimore if they aren't able to get Matt Ryan wanting to trade up to get Brohm or Flacco, but who knows.

April 21, 2008  02:43 PM ET

The Skins need to trade their owner ASAP...

April 21, 2008  04:04 PM ET

This is a team that took 5 weeks to hire Jim Zorn. They could have had Jim Zorn 5 minutes after Gibbs retired. Nothing would surprise me with this team.

April 21, 2008  04:47 PM ET

Pssh..we don't need a 3rd stringer...we got Randle El :D

April 21, 2008  06:01 PM ET

Yes...... down.....

April 21, 2008  06:17 PM ET

Bottom line about the Redskins - they truly suck !!!
