TNT crew rips Dirk's toughness

The excitable crew at TNT got all worked up about the Dirk Nowitzki-David West confrontation in Game 1. During the TNT telecast of the Toronto-Orlando game Sunday, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith criticized Nowitzki for not responding when West tapped him on the face a couple of times during a confrontation late in the game. "You can't let a man put his hand on your face in the playoffs," Johnson said. "I love Dirk Nowitzki," Barkley said. "Terrific, great player. But they're trying to say to you, 'We think you're soft.' That's what it means.... You've got to slap his hand down, and then you got to say, 'Hey, let that guy drive to the basket' and then you've got to knock the hell out of him." Smith said: "You have to punish them on the next couple of plays. The ball has to come to Dirk now, and he has to say, 'You know what? I'm going to really punish you for the disrespect of putting your hands in my face.'" Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was amused by the criticism. "I love those guys, but they are living in 1998," Cuban said by e-mail. "In this year's NBA, you retaliate, you get suspended. That's happened to us too many times. The NBA saw it, and it's up to them to deal with it." Nowitzki had little to say. "We played a physical game all night long," he said. "That's about it."

This is complete bull. You know what woulda happened if he "knocked the hell outtta him"? The Mavswould be outta the playoffs within 3 more games...

charles barkely lost all of his skills during space jam.

Stupid comments from the TNT crew. You have to be smart now. If he slaps his hands down who knows what that leads to? You know he's going to get a technical foul at the least. And in the playoffs, after 7 T's you get suspended. Why waste a T on that?

April 21, 2008  08:15 AM ET

Dirk is not a tough guy. He didn't want to start a fight in the playoffs. Who cares. He did the smart thing. Would they rather him run into the stand and start a fight?

April 21, 2008  08:15 AM ET

i think the krew is completely right.. thats been the knock on this guy 4 a long time.. great player. but soft and not a leader.. and wen ur in that situation u need 2 smack west hant of ur face homie.. u aint gonna get suspended 4 sumthiin like that.. and wut does that show ur teamates.. if u cant look out 4 urself then how can u lead this team 2 a championship.. u dont have 2 fight the guy but u cant let him punk u around u feel me.. thats disrespecfull.. but i guess thats just the way sum ppl are.. their just chilled u feel me,.. and if thats dirk then u can turn hin into sum1 else.. but u gotta step in 4 ur self and fight ur battles .. so i think the tnt krew is right.. not 2 tha extense that they made it seem that he should of done.. but u cant let a guy punk u around.. specially in the playoffs.. i mean com'n bro. ur gonna see this guy for at least 3 more games so wuts does that show..?? u gotta stand up 4 urself and let ppl now ur not soft.. bcus ppl will eat u alive hat way..

It's no secret that I think Dirk is over-rated, however, if Dallas comes back and wins this, everyone, even the knuckleheads at TNT, will eat their words and suddenly Dirks lack of "fighting" back will be the wisest thing everrrrrrrrrr! Play ball and let the final score do the talking, this isn't Piston or Celtic ball, this is basketball and if you can't win by playing go home and take up boxing or UFC.

April 21, 2008  08:53 AM ET

@futureespnanalysis: if that was satire...nice. If not, good God crack a book, that was nearly incomprehensible, and I pity anybody who has to communicate with you on a daily basis. Wow.

April 21, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Barkley didn't say punch the guy, you are allowed to knock someones hand off your face. Read the quote. Hornets are supposed to be the inexperienced team , same as was Golden State last year, but Dallas looks soft in the fourth. If anything they are just trying to help Dirk not go through what he did last year.

April 21, 2008  09:03 AM ET

If Dirk knocks his hand off his face what do you think is going to happen? West will say "Sorry Dirk, I was wrong." They'll be a big situation with plenty of people getting technical fouls and someone might leave the bench and get suspended. Be smart. Like Lebron said after beating the Wizards "I don't need to talk trash and push people. I let my game do the talking."

Can dirk game do that??? Dirk isnt going to go in the post and kill anyone...is he going to shoot from the outside and to a point...

I think when West touches his face....he should just smile and nod....then the next time you get the ball and you score....look at west and smile and nod....the next smile and point at the score....and in the 4th with about 1min left smile and point at the score.............BUT you wre losing

April 21, 2008  09:12 AM ET

NEVER LET A MAN TOUCH YOUR FACE PERIOD!!!! Basketball, the office, the gym NOWHERE!!! It was direspectful and shows what kind of punk Dirk really is!!! Slapping his hand down wouldnt have got him suspended!!! You guys come up with the most off-the-wall excuses for this chump!!

April 21, 2008  09:21 AM ET

Mac,

I agree with you totally. If you all think back Scottie was a little soft too. Then MJ got in his butt and told him to stand up.

Jerry Stackhouse is the conly guy on the Mavs team that wouldn't back down.

April 21, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Does anyone remember when KG got elbowed in the playoffs by Anthony Peeler? Did anybody call out KG for not retaliating?? No, everybody said he was smart for not doing anything. I know Dirk isn't as tough as KG, but you have to be smart and choose your battles. If this was the regular season, I say go ahead, do what you want Dirk.

April 21, 2008  09:43 AM ET

DIrk is good. What kind of power forward can shoot tres?only dirk

April 21, 2008  09:46 AM ET

this is not playground rules this is the NBA and these gangsters punks need to learn to have some type of control. Dirk is not some hard core tatooed up ganster who thinks he needs to prove his manhood by these types of idiocracies (however you spell it). Have some respect for yourself, your team and other people you ****!

April 21, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Dirk is soft!!! He never shows up in the playoffs.

April 21, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Dirk did the right thing. Now he just needs to hire some German thugs to rough West up.

April 21, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Even if it was smart not to retaliate, Dirk is still soft, and a flop artist.

April 21, 2008  09:54 AM ET

Dirk is soft but at least he doesn't take off a full season to rest a high ankle sprain like a few guys in Miami would.

I am not saying by any means that Dirk is the perfect player but you can find any flaws in any player no player is perfect.

I like the TNT crew but they are wrong about this. Dirk got a tech without even doing anything what do you think would have happened if actually did? Dirk did the smart thing by keeping his cool and also just pressure on David Stern and the NBA. They have suspended players for lot less (specially Mavs in the playoffs) lets see how they "handle" this. If they are really not bias against the Cuban's Mavs there should be some kind of suspension you cant just touch a player on the face and get away with it. Remember the Raptors vs. Nets couple of years back. Vince Carter horsing around with his ex-teammates (sorry cant remember the players name) got the other guy thrown out of the game. COMEON DAVID STERN SHOWS US YOU ARENT BIAS!!!!
