Bucks want Skiles, Knicks don't

Scott Skiles verbally has accepted an offer from the Bucks, erasing him as a Knicks coaching candidate, according to a league source. Skiles' imminent hiring strengthens front-runner Mark Jackson's candidacy. The Skiles camp was disappointed Donnie Walsh did not contact them this weekend. Skiles played for Walsh in Indiana. The Skiles camp denies it reached out to Walsh. That Walsh didn't bother to call Skiles is an indication how strongly the Knicks president feels about Jackson, who could be interviewed as soon as Wednesday, with Walsh indicating it's his job to lose. Skiles' bid may have been damaged because two prominent Knicks starters, Eddy Curry and Jamal Crawford, despised him with the Bulls. Skiles got them traded.

Skiles is a good coach for a year or two. Maybe 3 at the most. I think players tune him out after awhile..

Skiles would be a good college coach I think.

April 21, 2008  09:18 AM ET

The Bucks are going to regret this!!!

April 21, 2008  10:34 AM ET

Agreed.

Skiles seems to lack the ego-massaging mentallity that a top level NBA coach needs today. The drill seargant-coach doesn't work well when players can use free agency or trade demands to relocate. Also it is hard to keep screaming at players when they can choose to just go through the motions without much reprecussions to their bottom lines.

The Bucks need to draft the right person this year. Otherwise I don't see a great future (Redd is not too young).

This is also an indication that the Knicks intend to keep Curry and Crawford. Skiles is better off anyway. With Curry, Crawford, and Marbury, what are the Knicks going to change? Maybe they can win 25 games next year.

As a bulls fan i hated to see this guy leave.. a very good coach who i hope to see do well with the Bucks.. tired of the egos in todays sports.. its a privilege to be a professional athlete so just shut up and play (Gordon and Deng)

As for the bulls, carlisle is the right choice, though.

April 21, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Wow let's keep bench players instead of hiring a coach.

I am currently breathing in the Isiah-less air of the knicks-
I am smiling, my hair is growing back & the teeth are no longer ground to the nub

As for the next coach-
irrelevant as long as they preach DEFENSE & TEAMWORK

If Skiles can't get through to his players than he is a bad coach by NBA standards. Successful coaches nowadays are more casual in their rapport with the players.

The Knicks are finally forward thinking with Marc Jackson. The Bucks and Bulls should take notice.

April 21, 2008  12:41 PM ET

People need to understand that coaching involves so much more than X's and O's. In college, his style can work because he would be getting fresh legs into campus every year and with the best college players staying only 1 or 2 years, they won't burn out before they leave. I am a Chicagoan and a BULLS fan and I for one got tired of Skiles' criticisms of the players. Most have gone elsewhere and done well (see Tyson Chandler) or are starters. Imagine this, you are an old NBA veteran and he expects you to run up and down the floor every day in practice and in games, no break. You will break down but yet he says he desires having vets on his teams. Yeah, that worked out well (see Ben Wallace, PJ Brown). Young players making millions don't like to get yelled at when they make millions and know the reasons they are not winning is not because of their efforts but because management won't get star players

Actually the title was really - "Bucks want Skiles but Skiles does not want the Knicks."

That's true for ANY coach, unless their last names are Poppovich or Sloan

If the Knicks are going to keep the core of this team intact, it won't make any difference who the coach is. Changing management is like putting a band-aid on a cancer. This team has very few serviceable parts. Nobody wants these contracts, and Walsh has indicated he isn't buying them out. Knick fans should look forward to another 25 win season.

Glad the Bucks hire Skiles, which ensures they will finish behind the Bulls (assuming the Bulls will hire a coach better than Skiles/Boylan). People give Skiles too much credit for taking the Bulls to the playoff. It is Kirk held them together for the past 3 years, but he started wearing out this season due to constant misuse and unreasonable demands by Skiles (and Boylan to a less extent). Kirk had to always guard the opposing best offensive guards (they are often bigger SGs) for several yr. Which PG in the L would not wear out if they had to guard those taller SGs for the whole season??? When the Bulls lost consecutive games, Skiles always blamed players, particularly Kirk (because he often said we do not have leadership). The poor Kirk had to come out saying it is all my fault to save his coach face. I am sure M Williams would NEVER, ever guard for Redd should Skiles ask him to do so. If Skiles could not make Gordon play defense, how can he make Redd play defense? The Bucks will stay mediocrity or below mediocrity for the next 4 yr. Anyway I am so glad Skiles can no longer do damages to the progress of Bulls players - Thabo, Kirk, Tyrus.
