Will Eagles release Sheppard?

The trade market for Lito Sheppard so far has not matched the Eagles expectations. The Eagles have tried to avoid acknowledging that they have to trade Sheppard - just last week, team president Joe Banner spoke as if a trade were some sort of reluctant, less-than-appealing option - but the fact is they have to trade Sheppard. He clearly isn't going to play here any longer under his current contract.

Okay, the Eagles are talking to the Jets about DT Robertson, so why don't they package a trade for DT Robertson and a 4th round pick to Eagles for CB Lito Sheppard? That makes a lot of sense. The Jets need a Veteran CB that can hold down one side and the Eagles always are looking for more depth at DT.

Yes, the Eagles will release a Pro Bowl CB and get nothing in return...

So you are also aware of the eagles managerial style. Reid is holding out for a decent draft pick to replace Runyon or Thomas. I would love to see the birds pikc up a WR in the draft. In the next 2 years we'll be starting Kolb. Get a wr and build a offensive foundation for him

April 21, 2008  08:29 AM ET

I don't think we will be starting Kolb in 2 years. Unless McNabb gets hurt again, I can see him as a long term QB in this league.

As for Sheppard....I smell a draft day trade with him in the package on the way.

April 21, 2008  08:30 AM ET

Are Eagles fans really ready to get rid of McNabb? I think he has at least 3-4 "good years" left.

April 21, 2008  08:51 AM ET

bengals have extra picks in later rounds, they would probably give up something for sheppard. delta oneal barely hangs onto his starter's job in cincy, and for the right price, marvin would replace him.

April 21, 2008  08:58 AM ET

Where ever he ends up he is going to want to negiate a new contract. And for top money. That is the real hang up in all fo it...They will be fortunate to get a third round pic in this draft for him...it will have to be to a team with money under the cap now..

April 21, 2008  09:45 AM ET

Imagine if the Eagles started Sheppard and Samuels at the corners, and had Brown and BDawk at the safties. It would be a pretty sick secondary. But that won't happen.

April 21, 2008  09:46 AM ET

they won't release him...they will get at least something for him...i hope

April 21, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Why would they put Brown at SS? Seems like a waste of a top starter to me. No, they need to draft a straight out safety that can take over the SS spot and be schooled in both positions by Dawkins.

April 21, 2008  11:13 AM ET

It would be stupid to release him and get nothing in return. If they can't get a first round pick for him then trade him for a second round pick.

April 21, 2008  11:28 AM ET

this is a non-story. They won't cut him and get nothing back. They will wait till week 5 and see if a team would be willing to pony up a 1st rounder before the deadline.

Having said that, I don't see what happened that makes them not want to keep him there.

April 21, 2008  11:30 AM ET

I hope the Eagles go 0-3 and the philly fans go nuts. They then push out Andy Reid, their best coach since Dick Vermeil, and then trade McNabb to Philly,

Then I can say to the people in the office, be careful of what you wish for, it just might happen.

The Eagles would love to have him and Asante but Lito is upset with his deal after seeing what the Eagles ponied up to get Asante.

April 21, 2008  11:54 AM ET

He is unhappy with his contract so we HAVE to release him??? nah, he can sit at home and lose out on the millions instead. I think the best thing for Lito if we don't trade him is to play hard this year to prove he is still a top corner and that he isn't injury prone....right now the injury question hurts his value, apparently more than he realizes. Having all that talent at DB can't hurt for one season.

April 21, 2008  12:21 PM ET

Hey America's Legend.... Lito for Robertson and a 4th rd draft pick? dude, lito's a pro bowl corner... he has adurability question but he's more effective at corner than robertson at DT... he's worth at least a 1st round pick... if its a lower pick, then a better than avergae young player has to be included..

April 21, 2008  12:34 PM ET

He needs to come to the Saints. We get all the old CB's neway. I like Lito, he could help, we just signed Aaron Glenn come on now, got the shaft on JD, and MnM is hurt cause he is getting up there in age. We need a savior in our pass defense.

April 21, 2008  12:41 PM ET

why do they want to trade or release him anyway??hes young and good.him and samuel on the corners would be really tough

April 21, 2008  12:46 PM ET

Brown played saftey in college. so it wouldn't be a stretch for him to do it now.

April 21, 2008  01:12 PM ET

Just to make it perfectly clear - The Patriots are not interested in Lito Sheppard. Not now - not ever !!!
