Red Sox consider benching Lugo

The Red Sox are so frustrated with the way shortstop Julio Lugo has played so far this year that they will consider giving some playing time at shortstop to prospect Jed Lowrie if it continues. Lowrie is currently in the majors because third baseman Mike Lowell is on the DL, but could get some time at short if he shows anything while he's up.

its apparent that Lugo was a huge waste of money. Let Lowrie play...he cant be any worse! we can still use him as a $10M base runner!

Yes yes yes. A million times yes.

Lowrie can play.

Lugo has been a waste of money but they needed a SS when they signed him and he had always hit good at Fenway. However, he has performed quite horrible last year and this month. I say if Lowri keeps hitting like he has been then do it but Lowri could end up being a good trade piece in a blockbuster for someone like Hanley Ramirez

How is it that all these stories today come from Newark star ledger? How are they coming up with this stuff?

April 21, 2008  09:35 AM ET

Despite the general consensus of this board, the benching of Lugo will not be permanent. The Sox have no intention of keeping Lowrie in Boston for the rest of the season. He'll be sent back to Pawtucket and probably won't see Boston again until after the All-Star break, barring injury. I love the Sox and would like nothing more than to see Lugo sit for good, but it's just not gonna happen. I know the Sox too well.

Why do you think that, socal?

Hey -- easy on the Newark Star-Ledger. I wrap my fish in their sports section, that is, when the Boston Herald isn't available.

I think this is the same paper that gave away the ending to Kevin Costner's 1987 film NO WAY OUT when their preview read, "Kevin Costner plays a Russian spy ..."

theo was real high on lugo a year or two before they signed him. there was even whipsers of a trade the year before he was signed. i think it was becuz he was a hitting machine when he was in fenway, but once he got on the team he stunk. i love the idea of packaging him and coco together. but no one is gonna want lugo. Lowrie looks real sharp tho

way to ruin it for me bluesilver

Nice pic of Bill Buckner. Do you think one day we can do the same for A$ante $amuel.

Nuff said,... Thanks Blue/Silver.
Time will tell on the Hoolio Loogo front, but I'm not all that worried either way. This kid Lowrie is supposed to be very good but I see no reason for any panic buttons to be pushed. Bring Lowrie along with patience is my attitude.
Hoolio isn't going to hurt us too bad if the right people say and do the right things with him.

Are some Boston fans admitting a mistake by wonder boy Theo???? Holy crap...call the presses that's the real story here!

My take is that if either of these guys had any real value they would've been traded a long time ago. They have fat contracts so it makes it even harder to deal without having to pick up some of the tab.

Yanks should pull a Frank Thomas with Giambi and Moose. Eat the money and let them go. There are piles of horse crap that are worth more than these guys combined.

April 21, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Well the bigger mistake was not resigning Orlando Cabrera after the 2004 season. Since then they haven't had anyone good at SS. Right now Lowrie might be the better choice to play at short. And like someone said earlier if you can't find a taker for Lugo he can be a $10M baserunner.

Theo has been very good with picking up pitchers but he's not been the best with the hitters.
