Penn LB to commit to Buckeyes

Gateway linebacker Dorian Bell, ranked among the top 20 players in the country, visited Ohio State this weekend and Gateway coach Terry Smith said Bell is "close" to committing to the Buckeyes. There is a chance Bell might commit as early as today, when an Ohio State assistant coach is supposed to visit Gateway. Bell has scholarship offers from more than 30 schools. Pitt, Penn State, West Virginia, Michigan and Florida State are among the schools that have offered Bell, a member of the Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 last year.

Could this be yet another victory for Tressel over Michigan and PSU? it kind of looks that way.

is OSU the real Line backer U?

is OSU the real Line backer U?

They're good but their LB unit isn't better than Penn States and this article is relates to a high schooler who is far from proven.

April 21, 2008  11:46 AM ET

it was meant to be sarcastic, but I'll put laurenitis, freeman, and terry against anyone anywhere...

April 21, 2008  11:46 AM ET

I believe he was an OSU lock from day one. I don't think UM or PSU were ever really in contention for his services so to say it's a victory for Tressel is a bit far fetched. None the less, it's a great pick up for OSU if it happens. But lets see if Michigan can still get him to visit A2 so that RR can put on his wizard's hat and convice Bell that OSU is a waste of his time. :P

April 21, 2008  11:54 AM ET

I mean, he's a 5-star LB prospect out of high school who's highlight films show him unblocked more than 2/3 of the time... what could possibly go wrong at the college level? All of the rest are NFL starting LBs, no?

If a guy commits to your arch rival before even visiting, do you even care? I don't need any more Justin Boren losers, thank you.

April 21, 2008  11:58 AM ET

yeah but you know how that snake oil salesman is...unless they are wearing the jersey he's trying to get them

April 21, 2008  02:54 PM ET

There is no question whether or not OSU is Linebacker U... THEY ARE!

April 21, 2008  04:05 PM ET

Motter, Ohio State has great players and Laurenitis is a beast but that doesn't make OSU Linebacker U. Google it.

April 21, 2008  04:13 PM ET

NWPA - Are you kidding me? OSU has second string linebackers that would be starting at PS. Laurenitis and Freeman are both first round draft choices next year.

April 21, 2008  04:18 PM ET

Look at the two linebackers we have coming in this fall (Sabino and Sweat) that were top rated last year. Sweat is from PA by the way. Look at the linebacker class for 2009, Bell, Whiting and Klein. The rich get richer and PS is not even close to this group.

April 21, 2008  04:19 PM ET

Its official, Dorian Bell committed earlier this afternoon, and the rich get richer.

April 21, 2008  04:37 PM ET

Ohio State is becoming a Linebacker U quickly. I'm not going to go out and say we deserve the title from Penn State, but just a couple Buckeye 'backers:

Tom Cousineau
Chris Spielman
Mike Vrabel
Bobby Carpenter
A.J. Hawk
Andy Katzenmoyer
James Laurinaitis
Na'il Diggs
Anthony Schlegel
Matt Wilhem

Plus, Ohio State picked up commits for 2008 from both the #1 and #2 inside linebackers, Etienne Sabino and Andrew Sweat, both of whom have been making noise at spring practices according to sources. Again, not saying Ohio State is Linebacker U instead of Penn State, just saying OSU has a very strong linebacker tradition.

April 21, 2008  04:40 PM ET

how much you guys think tressel paid for this kid? a car? a house?

April 21, 2008  04:53 PM ET

SC,

Tressel didn't have to pay Bell anything. Tressel just had Pryor give him some of his to get his commitment! :P

Nice pickup. I hope he enjoys the competition for that starting position.

April 21, 2008  04:55 PM ET

great pickup, the kid is a future star

April 21, 2008  05:22 PM ET

With OSU's easy scheduling, of course they will make the run for the NC year after year.....unless UM regains their powerhouse status under RR.
