Rangers luke warm on Thomas

The Rangers' interest in disgruntled Frank Thomas appears to be tepid, at best. Thomas, whom the Rangers courted before the 2007 season, was released by Toronto on Sunday after going ballistic after he was benched. Thomas, 39, is limited to designated hitter duty, and the Rangers are up to their necks in DH candidates. The club would prefer to use Frank Catalanotto as a DH rather than an outfielder, but he's had to play some left as Milton Bradley continues to recover from last year's knee surgery.

Maybe Kenny Williams had it right in Chicago.......

I wish more teams would follow the Blue Jays' example and drop the extremely overpaid used to be star. The Yanks need to do that with messrs Giambi and Mussina.

April 21, 2008  10:09 AM ET

Giambi and Mussina will both be gone after this season so releasing them now wouldn't make much sense.

Texas needs pitching, and lots of it.

Who started this rumor? Thomas needs to retire. The Rangers don't need to keep getting other teams' problem children.

April 21, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Hey, Frank Thomas still has plenty of power left. Sure, his fielding skill has decreased, along with his average, but he can still drive in runs and hit homers.

April 21, 2008  10:53 AM ET

He is still definitely a threat, some team is going to pick him up. He get a job before Barry.

maybe keep Mussina, but Giambi is worthless. he is taking up a roster spot. he can't hit, field or run. he is a liability. His worth is entirly based on his performance from earlier in his career. its time to give a younger player a shot. Beside, the money is already spent - its a sunk costs.

Milton Bradley is the most under appreciated player in baseball. Texas is showing him a great deal of disrespect (even with recovery from knee surgery) for even considering Thomas. As a Padre fan, I still miss and respect this guy even with some of the drama.

The Big Hurt should have hung it up after last year. I hope he ends up some place where he can start at DH and have success but he really needs to go ahead and retire at the end of the year.
He probably will have a hard time finding a team to sign with after his history now in Toronto and with Chicago of blowing up and being a crybaby.

Field Marshall, those Padres BK unis are sweet! Even sweeter when you look at the Toronto unis taken out of the attic.

If I was Thomas and I can't throw, field, run or hit anymore I would just sit back for now count my 8 mil. dollars and bid adieu to baseball. He has had a long and lucrative career and "baseball has been very very good to him".

What a selfish piece of crap, his quote"I aint going out like this" says it all. He gets 8 million for 60 ab and 3 homers.......he says look what i did against Boston,,,,,,,,we swept them.....that was against a tired team coming off the longest road trip (miles) ever...those pitchers were just groving them. e's finished....done....dont let the door hit yer fat butt on the way.

another useless blue jay

Thomas can still hit a little, if a team is willing to put up with his crap. How about the Angels? Mariners? Both could use a little sock in their batting order. Tampa?
