How 76ers suckered Pistons

Early in the game, Rasheed Wallace kept looking over at 76ers coach Mo Cheeks like he was crazy. The 76ers' game plan coming into the game Sunday was to guard Wallace with Samuel Dalembert, alone. Single-coverage. After Wallace scored eight points in five minutes, he yelled over at Cheeks, "You better change this, it ain't going to work." Cheeks was crazy, all right. Crazy like a fox. Wallace did get 24 points, though he missed 12 of 21 shots. Dalembert got into foul trouble. But here's the other side of that. Cheeks knew the Pistons would try to force the ball into Wallace and try to exploit that mismatch. He figured their obsession with that would negate the scoring threat of Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton. Hamilton scored 13 points (5 for 17) with four turnovers. Billups had 14 points (3 for 9) with just four assists. And in the second half, Wallace's shot stopped falling. He missed five of his last eight shots.

Suckered? How about out played and therefore won.

April 21, 2008  08:07 AM ET

Yea, out played is the better phrase. They were hungrier..

April 21, 2008  08:24 AM ET

We'll see how hungry the 76ers are in game 2. My guess is you will see the other Pistons team, the one that stomps them into next week.

April 21, 2008  08:32 AM ET

The Pistons are going to win this series. There's no question about that I think. But they need to stop playing around with teams that aren't on their level. What's the point of going to a 5 or 6 game series when you can sweep this team? You don't see Boston playing around out there.

April 21, 2008  08:40 AM ET

While Detroit will probably win the series, I'd rather be up 1 zip than down 1 zip.

April 21, 2008  08:58 AM ET

Missed the game........but great job Philly. At mid season the Sixers could not have dreamed this scenario.

At least they stole one...sometimes thats all it takes. GO SIXERS!!!

April 21, 2008  10:16 AM ET

The Sixers are a good team. They have some impressive wins against the likes of San Antonio, Phoenix, Dallas, Boston in recent months, the difference here is its the playoffs. Better teams are supposed to not let this happen. I don't think anyone, including AI and Sammy would argue that Detroit is the better team, but better teams don't always necessarily win. Detroit just has to wake up again. Someone get Rip going again.. for the love...

Average age of the Pistons: 35.4
Average age of the Sixers: 26.1

Move over, grandpas. Sixers stomped you and will do it again.

April 21, 2008  10:36 AM ET

underrated, no one ever gave the 76ers a chance

April 21, 2008  10:39 AM ET

I think the Pistons underestimated Philly, but it all came down to then end of the game, and the Pistons missed foul shots, and other scoring opportunities. Philly took advantage of the opportunities they were given, and came away with a win. I don't see this as anything to be concerned about. Detroit in 6.

April 21, 2008  10:45 AM ET

Pistons win in five.

April 21, 2008  11:06 AM ET

had philly not turned the ball over (Iggy's dribble off his foot in the last minute) and not missed three of their own fouls (Iggy missed three in a row in the last minut or two) they would have won by seven, but can they do it three more times????? let's hope so!

April 21, 2008  11:36 AM ET

All that matters is who won. It wasn't pretty but it worked.

April 21, 2008  11:49 AM ET

It seem to me that the Pistons were in trouble from the start because Rasheed seemed jolly and not aggravated.

April 21, 2008  12:01 PM ET

The Pistons might be on the way down.

April 21, 2008  12:13 PM ET

das right sixers beat the pistons.

April 21, 2008  12:28 PM ET

how many points did AI score....?

April 21, 2008  12:32 PM ET
