Gamecocks QBs frustrate Spurrier

After South Carolina's two quarterbacks combined for eight interceptions in Saturday's spring game, it's pretty clear that Stephen Garcia needs to get his act together and get back into school. The redshirt freshman is on suspension until Aug. 15 after he was arrested for underage drinking. It was Garcia's third run-in with the law since he got to campus 16 months ago. He is scheduled to apply for readmission after he undergoes alcohol counseling. Even if Garcia gets back into school that is no guarantee that he'll get on the field for coach Steve Spurrier anytime soon. But Spurrier doesn't sound like a guy who is in love with either of the other two quarterbacks-Chris Smelley or Tommy Beecher.

That???s what Spurrier gets... he had an excellent playmaker in Syvelle Newton, and Spurrier didn't appreciate Syvelle's abilities as a quarterback.

Spurrier needs to just kick this kid off the team. If he took away football from Garcia, maybe the young man would think twice about his actions.

April 22, 2008  11:36 AM ET

Agreed

April 22, 2008  12:13 PM ET

Syvelle has been gone over a year now. What's that got to do w/anything? I think Coach Spur ruined our season by undermining Mitchell's confidence last year. That crap worked at Fla but those guys were HS All-Americans. He just needs to pick one and tell him 'You're my guy". Then stick to his word.

We gotta do something because the SEC East will be the strongest and fastest this year and our offense needs to catch up with our new defense this year.

April 22, 2008  12:19 PM ET

I totally agree with you Scotty, we collapsed when coach put unrest in Chris S.

April 22, 2008  12:43 PM ET

Yeah, Newton graduated... a while back, and from what I see really changed the way that the HBC sees the QB position. He is looking at a dual threat QB as part of his system now, not his old style of pocket passers. So I believe him and Syvelle are probably pretty good friends. It's just a spring game nothing much to read into, bith Beecher and Smelley had pretty off days. One thing that can be said as a positive is that our DB are going to be very talented and very deep. We have a long way to go before season kicks off and a lot to learn before then. I hope the offense can come around but if not, I am ready to stand behind our defense. With the returning starters and key players returning from injuries, the D should be able to stop the run attack, and the our speed and depth at DB should be able hold up agains anything in the SEC this year. I am not saying that we won't blow some coverages and give up some big plays but I think our D will keep us in games if our O is sputtering in the begining of the season. Maaybe HBC told Smelley and Beecher to throw a bunch of picks so we would look weak at passing, work the run against NC and Vandy then air it out against UGA. Doubt it but you never know, he could be taking a page from Art of War.. Ok... I know, it is a crazy conspiracy thoery but you never know what might work.

April 22, 2008  12:44 PM ET

how do you pronounce:
"Chris Smelley "
last name?

April 22, 2008  01:06 PM ET

Let???s not worry about things that people cannot help like last names and worry more about our grammar.

April 22, 2008  01:07 PM ET

as it sounds...

April 22, 2008  01:33 PM ET

thats cool about the last name. i just did not know for sure.
i think he did pretty well as a freshman.
as lee corso asserts that SC is the team to beat in the SEC East, wow. i need to do some scouting to he what he is talking about.

April 22, 2008  02:48 PM ET

"as lee corso asserts that SC is the team to beat in the SEC East,"

They are absolutely the team to beat. For 4th place.

April 22, 2008  03:34 PM ET

woo!!!!

April 22, 2008  03:54 PM ET

Smelley is the best qb that they have

April 22, 2008  04:01 PM ET

It would have been interesting to see how Garcia would have done in that spring game. He's been in school for two spring practices and has yet to take a snap. Why...because of his stupid immature behavior that keeps getting him locked up. He'll be elgible for reinstatement in August. That's if the University allows him to come back.

April 22, 2008  05:11 PM ET

And he'll still be allowed to play. HBC doesn't care how many times you're arrested, in trouble, whatever...if he needs you...you'll play. First time someone slips up that isn't needed much, kicked off the team. SC has to be proud to have so many arrests but no one suspended for actual games. Spring practice, a practice here or there, but game time he's playing. And you wonder why they keep getting into trouble...

April 22, 2008  05:55 PM ET

ha he had it coming
garcias a major partier

April 22, 2008  06:07 PM ET

Dear Steve - how can you be frustrated when you were part of the same problem. I don't think you made your "mark" on anything special. You my friend are one BIG egomaniac !!!

That sounds like something the HBC would do, especially against UGA.
