Chiefs stalling Vikings trade

The Vikings' quest to acquire Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen remained on hold Monday as Kansas City continued to explore its options regarding the NFL's 2007 sacks leader. He spent Friday and Saturday visiting Winter Park -- along with his agent, Ken Harris -- and the sides were believed to be close. The potential trade between the Vikings and Chiefs isn't nearly as close. The Vikings appear willing to send the 17th overall pick, as well as the first of their two third-round selections (No. 73) in this weekend's draft to Kansas City. The Chiefs, though, likely are looking for a first- and second-round selection and also are talking to other interested teams. This includes the Buccaneers.

This is just stupid. The Chiefs aren't going to do any better from Tampa, who only have a total of 5 draft picks. If they are serious about trading him, Minnesota is about the only real place that he is going. Like I said yesterday, both teams need to work this out. Minnesota wants him. The Chiefs don't want to pay for him and want to build through the draft. And Allen has stated that he wanted out, and likes what he sees in Minnesota. Grow up and make it work.

Yep, he's not going anywhere else but here. Plus he knows what he and the Williams can do. This is typical and drawn out for the chiefs, but the Chiefs still do hold all the cards. Heck, they could try to get the two first rounders for the franchise guy if they really want, or hold onto him and not let anyone get him. I think they will go for what the Vikings have offered, throw in another late pick as well, I could care less. KC needs to develop players as well.

of course they are ... it's poker

jctoo | 04/22/08, 07:39 AM

and the Chiefs don't have a good poker face

April 22, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Jared Allen will end up a Viking when it's all said and done..

April 22, 2008  10:10 AM ET

The Chiefs are nuts to let this guy go. Rebuilding or not, sack stars are hard to come by. Drafting a rookie is a huge gamble, the Vikes will be stealing a sure thing.

April 22, 2008  10:40 AM ET

If the Chiefs don't make the trade they will get Allen for one more year and lose him and have nothing to show for it. There is no chance in hell they are winning a super bowl next season, so what advantage to they keeping Allen? The Vikings will through another draft pick into the mix and this deal will get done. I hope we can hold onto our 2 rounder next year. I'm hoping we can trade away our this years 1st round, 1 thrid round pick, and maybe a 5th or 6th rounder.

I KNOW this will not happen - but just for fun - send Allen to Cincy straight-up for Chad Johnson.

If nothing else, would love to see ocho cinco go from a good team to a bad team (no offense KC Fan)

April 22, 2008  11:31 AM ET

The Vikings are going to be good next year.

April 22, 2008  12:45 PM ET

I hope this deal get's done, even if the Vikes have to throw in one more pick to make it happen. Allen with make a big difference on the Vikes, and will help make them a serious contender this year. Last year their two biggest holes were DE and WR.. and they upgraded WR a bit by getting Berrian.. though they could still use help there. If they get Allen they will be a solid team that can win consistantly the next couple years. And I have faith that T-Jax will keep improving. He may not ever be a star, but I think he will at least be solid, especially if he gets a couple good recievers to throw to.. Go Vikes!

April 22, 2008  12:55 PM ET

The Vikes have offered their first and first third.
The Chiefs want their first and second.

Minnesota should up their offer to their first and both thirds as a compromise.

Bottom line though... I don't think this deal gets done until draft day. This keeps everyone below the Chiefs guessing and may entice another team to trade up.

April 22, 2008  12:55 PM ET

Keep stalling as you know you want to play for the Panthers......not the
Vikes or Bucs....Have your agent call our agent:)

April 22, 2008  12:59 PM ET

The bucs will raise the price for him, but he'll end up in Minny.

April 22, 2008  01:21 PM ET

Guys, it's Carl Peterson. He's a hard arse when it comes to trades. It'll get done in the umpteenth hour.

April 22, 2008  01:22 PM ET

Latest word is 1st and 3rd this year and 2nd next year ( which is just one pick lower 33 than the Vikings next year pick at 32) Superbowl Homeboy!!!!!!!!!!

April 22, 2008  01:29 PM ET

The Vikes better get this guy. I think Robison can also become a good pass rusher with time, so in a couple of years we will have an even better D-line! Hey Minidoo, love the Sioux logo! It's time for #8 in 09!

April 22, 2008  01:48 PM ET

Hey SiouxVikesYanks, I thought it was going to be #8 in 08 but BC did it to the Sioux again.

The Vikes defense would be much improved with any kind of pass rush but can the defense compensate for the lack of QB play? I personally don't think so but maybe Jackson can work out his mechanics and continue to learn to read defenses.

April 22, 2008  02:07 PM ET

All I can say to Vikings Management is: PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!! Generally speaking, I am very optimistic about adding Allen and the playmaking potential he can instantly add to the Vike's defense and am therefore GENERALLY speaking for the trade. That said, Allen does have some issues. He says he's over them, of course, but guess what, Koren Robinson said the SAME THING. Some Vikings fans out there might not be old enough to remember, but the Vike's should be careful not to give up too much for a trade that can go sour on them. (Can you say Hershel Walker!!!) I'm just saying, if Allen screws up, he could wind up suspended for the year or worse and there sit the Vikes - again - with their future drafts screwed and a big hole in their starting line up.

April 22, 2008  02:09 PM ET

Minnesota should up their offer to their first and both thirds as a compromise.

jbuck | 04/22/08, 12:55 PM

wrong wrong WRONG.

The Vikings should learn from the Twins' trade of Johan Santana, AND REDUCE THEIR OFFER. They should offer their first and the LATTER third rnd pick. And if they Chefs don't take it, they should offer a first and fourth on draft day.

The Vikes do hold the upper hand, but they also have needs to address in the draft as well, and should never start throwing half their draft into getting Jared Allen. That's as bad as continuing to chuck picks at backup QBs

April 22, 2008  02:23 PM ET

If the Chiefs stall all the way up until they make their first pick Saturday (or right after) I would tell them to forget it if I was the Vikings. The Vikings are willing to take this "problem" off of their hand for a 1st and a 3rd and that is not good enough. NE got Moss for only a 4th!

I would tell the Chiefs they blew it and then sign Allen to a monster deal (even bigger than the one they negotiated) leaving KC with the option to either match or get the Vikings 1st in 2009 & 2010.

If the Vikings are better than last year then those picks will be in the 20's (hopefully the late 30's).
