Paterno dislikes age-old debate

Segments of fans and alumni are pushing for change, and the once-untouchable Joe Paterno is facing a somewhat unclear future as the Nittany Lions' coach. If Paterno is going to continue coaching beyond the coming season, his marriage to the university will be consummated with a handshake. If not, Spanier and Athletic Director Tim Curley may be faced with the unenviable task of asking the iconic Paterno to step down. Other teams have used Paterno's age and unknown future to recruit against the Lions, Tom Lemming, the CSTV recruiting analyst, said. For Paterno, retirement has long been a sensitive topic. He is wont to point out that he does not fish. He does not golf. Football is his hobby.

People need to lay off Joe.

The last time this discussion heated up we went 11-1 and won the BCS Orange bowl. We're going to be good again in '08.

Most schools don't talk about firing their coach after winning 3 straight bowl games, one of them a BCS game.

Somebody said it in an earlier post: give the guy his due: make him coach emeritus or something. Even Nobel prize winning scientists retire. Just figure out a way to make "executive" coach or something and find a replacement who can live with that.

its the same deal with Bowden at fsu-

Hall of fame careers.....but their hey-days were really before all these current kids were watching football....they don't want to play for 'old men'

it's not like 20 years ago, when there were 4-5 teams that got on TV & top prospects only went there.
Now with all the media- you go where a) you will play b) where your talents will best be visualized.

Both icons need to step down & let a new fresh voice get in, before their storied programs become so mediocre that they can't get back to national prominence when the successors eventually come in

AH he can disliek the age old debate all he likes, the dude is a walking corpse man, he needs to retire with diginity before he craps himself on the field during a game. Sorry if that is harsh, but it almost happened last year ha

Keep talking people... Joe will have the last laugh when Penn State exceeds everyone's expectations this year... and after watching the spring game and footage of him during spring practice... i can't imagine anyone else being head coach right now.. he still gets in players faces and tells them what is what.. let him go out on his terms.. He still has the fire to coach.. recruiting has been a pain the butt recently.. but who doesn't like seeing a 2 or 3 star player eventually turning into a good football player!?.. Puz.. Butler.. Lee.. Green.. Norwood.. come on.. the list grows and grows.. those players have something to prove.. and those are the types of players who go into practice working their tail off to prove something.. only players over the years PSU has had problems with are the big time prospects.. Bell was a 5*.. Morelli 5*.. Bowman.. god.. do you see what i mean people?

JoePa is doing himself a diservice by putting the institution he loves in an awkward position. He knows damn well that his age is an issue. He made only ONE recruiting visit last year. That's not going to get it done, especially if he wants a top ten recruiting class which he hasn't had in years. It's time to respect Penn State and discuss his plans for retirement, or accept thier decision.

He made more than 1 recruiting trip. Maybe only one visit to see Pryor but I know he made a trip to see a kid in Maryland. I'm sure he has made others.

JoePa and Penn Stat are going to have a great season in '08. The team is stacked this year.

This from Stuart Mandel at SI speaking about Paterno and recruiting QB Pryor; ; "Paterno made his first recruiting trip in two years in an effort to land the quarterback, and Pryor spoke fondly of his relationship with ace recruiter Bradley."
