Riley to talk future with Heat owner

It's against that backdrop of issues that Pat Riley and Heat owner Mickey Arison will meet this week, possibly as early as Tuesday, to discuss the direction of a team looking to regroup from a season that began ugly and only deteriorated. In recent weeks, Riley, who said he was spending last weekend evaluating his options, has sounded as though he were leaning toward stepping down as coach after 25 seasons that have included five NBA titles and 1,210 victories, third-most in history. But after the Heat's season-ending victory against Atlanta last Wednesday, Riley talked about being re-energized by the challenge of leading Miami through an offseason makeover. Miami, with the NBA's worst record, has a 46.5 percent chance to land one of the top two picks in the May 20 draft lottery.

If Miami gets another lotto pick next year (probably top 4 again), then they have a pretty good future ahead. Marion and Davis will probably take a pay cut in order to stay in Miami (hard to believe people would do that for such a bad team). Plus, Miami has several expiring contracts so they should be under the salary cap.

With more good coaches becoming available on the market, why does Riley need to return as the coach? He can go back to being a GM, which he now does better in his older age.
However, there would be a problem with the Heat hiring a star coach (like Larry Brown, for example). Would Riley let such a coach co-exist in the organization with him, or would there be ego issues? Maybe a low-key coach like a Van Gundy is ideal for the Miami situation.

I still can't believe that this Riley character is still active, can't he just die to end the heat's misery?

Riley should become Isiah's assistant. He is the only coach that has proven to be as incompetent. I'm sure he doesn't need money. He should go spend more time with his family.

Hllywd,

I couldn't agree with you more. This should be a quick meeting going something like this....Thank you Mr. Arison. I will not steal any more money from you. I have decided NOT to impersonate a coach next season. Thanks again.....BTW: are you going to pay me thru the end of my contract? Sorry sir, just thought I would ask.

guys....riley has won 5 championships.u compare him to isiah who has done absolutley nothing as a coach....gimme a break..hes already a HOFER.everybody has a bad yr here and there

April 22, 2008  10:32 AM ET

Correction Cane,

Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Scott, Coop, Wilks, etc won those championships. Coaching is so overrated. If my players are better than yours I will beat you most of the time ..if not all of the time in Basketball.

He won games in NY no ring(s). He won with the Heat because Detroit flod and Wade had a career series. Riley's personnel decisions lately have been very questionable. He took a good team away from Stan. His time has passed.

April 22, 2008  10:52 AM ET

soflaboy..to a point i agree with u,but not totally..it still takes a coach to make those personalities mesh and keep everybody happy...lately his decisions have been bad ,i agree.he still is pat riley and he deserves respect..without riley ,shaq would of never even of come to the heat, hence,no NBA title.

April 22, 2008  11:02 AM ET

coaching is overated?? do u think the pats would be where they are without belicheck??i dont think they would

April 22, 2008  11:08 AM ET

southflaboy....i noticed u said in basketball..i agree with ya a bit more in basketball the better team does win..still takes a guy to motivate.i think the players stopped listening to riley though so i think he should go too..but u have to respect him for what hes done

Keys 4 my Heaters: tell J Will & Blount carry they behind and sign with another team, pg's 2 consider: Dooling/Nate Robinson.
Get Beasly from the draft & 1 of the Lopez twins or Brad Miller & a scorer out of the draft like a Tyrese Rice from Boston College, Stephen Curry "son of Dell Curry" & we should be good.
And when my Heaters get good again no jumping on this ship.

April 22, 2008  01:12 PM ET

Cane,

Why should Riley get paid for what he has done? This is what have you done for me lately world. It also seem like Shaq left Miami because of Riley. Riley quit on his team this season, period and I think he asked some of the players to quit (Marion/Wade).

Taking a vacation to go "scout the ncaa" players is quiting. This isn't brain surgery. You and I probably make a decision on who are the top 3 players in the draft w/o going to scout them. Rose, Beasley, and .....Riley should know his teams needs and select from there. It will be tough to pass on the two I named aboved.

April 22, 2008  01:26 PM ET

i agree it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out the top 3...lately he has sucked but he has been there, done that..his resume is pretty impressive

April 22, 2008  04:49 PM ET

He not longer live up to his resume. Proves my point coaching is over-rated. Better players win not coaches 98% of the time.

I guess you think Doc Rivers learned to coach over the summer. No, he added KG and Ray Allen to help Paul Peirce.

Excellent!!! A year ago Celtic fans wanted his head. Now they want him for coach of the year. Not!!!

April 22, 2008  07:50 PM ET

Why not? He sure as hades doesn't want to talk about the past...

April 26, 2008  11:19 AM ET

OK I'm done. Now that that's done, who thinks the Spurs looked a little old last night? You can see the age catching up with them, I mean when Tim dunked on Amare the second time, I thought wow he's so old. Let's not even begin to talk about Parker, I mean where is his head at? He needs to get in the game, only 41 points. Man he's probably just thinking of which island he'll take Eva to after the season's over. They are done. I think the Suns will roll off 4 straight. You can just see it in their eyes, the hunger, the longing, the focus. Suns in 7 baby. (HA!)
