Disgruntled Jets TE walks out
Jets tight end Chris Baker, disgruntled with his contract status and management's apparent refusal to renegotiate, has left the team's offseason strength and conditioning program in protest, The Post has learned. Baker, who's fresh off the best season of his career, having caught 41 passes and become more of a focal point in the Jets' offense, has two years remaining on his $6.6 million contract and he's clearly underpaid by NFL starting tight end standards.

I like Baker- & he's been very underused in his time here with NY......
But there is no way you re-do his contract. He is NOT an elite player
If he sits out- which he won't- cut him......no big deal-

A lot of fans want to replace EVERY player that the Redskins or Bengals have. Then beginning with the owners, they want everyone else tarred and feathered and run out of town. Hhhmmmm And as for the jests, a lot of people thought that the Patsies (as they were called) would never be better than decent.

2.5 receptions a game & he wants a new deal. Hard to rationalize paying these guys when you know he probably has 180 pairs of shoes in his closet. I could stretch $6.6 out pretty far. Just don't buy $100,000 rims.

"A lot of fans want to replace EVERY player that the Redskins or Bengals have." I don't know a lot of fans so i cant speak for the majority, but the fans I do know in Cincy have little problem with the Bengals current roster.

I am tired of players in all professional sports wanting to re negoiate a contract because they are coming off a good year or this guy makes more than me blah, blah, blah.. You signed the agreement stick to your contract. Can owners re negoiate when they are doing lousy and have a sub par sesaon? You signed the deal stick with your deal and appreciate that you are able to play damn, you are blessed with a talent that many people would love to have stop crying...

Ya know, i really thought the same way everyone here is thinking until i realized that the 2 million the Jets gave Bubba Franks is more then Baker will make this year. How is that right? I realize that Baker hasn't had the impact that most thought he would up to this point, but come on...the backup makes more money then the starter...no bueno.

The one thing people forget is that the NFL does not give guaranteed contracts. It is a tough call, think about Baseball and what the danger to a team a guaranteed contract can be. Barry Zito, or as I like to call him Mike Hampton Part Two. A team spends a fortune on a guy, is forced to pay every penny for every year no matter how bad he stinks. On the flip side is the NFL, they can basically drop a player with a contract at will. NFL players face massive body injuries, no guarantees short of signing bonuses and then get to retire and face the worst pension in sports. As much as I agree about athletes who don't honor their contracts, I do also understand that it must be really hard to face playing the NFL where all the power of your financial future is in the hands of owners.
