Is Avery Johnson on hot seat?

If the Mavericks lose this series to New Orleans, Mark Cuban must decide whether Avery Johnson can lead his team to a championship. A few months ago, the question would've been laughable. These days, it's legitimate. After New Orleans spent the final few minutes Tuesday of a 127-103 win clowning the Mavs and attempting dunks usually reserved for practice, Cuban must wonder whether the players still respond to Avery. If Avery can't figure out how to get his team to respond and win this series, then none of us should be surprised if Cuban fires him.

This team has no heart right now. Totally deflated. They are heading home though.

April 23, 2008  08:10 AM ET

Awful, just awful.

April 23, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Heck yeah its time to get rid of Avery. During timeouts the players are looking up at the scoreboard rather than listening to what he says. They have no half court offense. I mean 80% of the plays are drawn up like 1.) dribble the ball above the 3-point line for 10 seconds 2.) Give the ball to Dirk while hes posted up against 2 people. 3.) Everyone else clear out.

Another thing is how in the world can Avery not create a defensive scheme where Dampier ends up guarding Chris Paul off a pick and roll. Its pathetic. Make sure to visit wwww.fireavery.com

Heck yes he's on the hotseat!!! After last night's blowout, he better come up with a serious gameplan on how to get past the first round. If he doesn't, I have no doubt Cuban will let him go. They look sad right now.

I'd also be looking to deal Terry, Howard, and Stackhouse...those three should be ashamed of themselves for playing the way they have. You can't blame everything on the coach you know.

Oh yeah, and Dirk continues to be a softie. Such a waste of a big man. Can't believe he let West just disrespect him the way he did and he didn't even say squat. You're at least justified in pushing his arm away but you sit there and let him talk to you like a schoolboy? You punka%$!!

April 23, 2008  09:01 AM ET

Cool...send him to Miami...it's not avery johnson, its that dallas superstar and big men aren't tough. Dirk tries to be such as taking hard files, but its time to see dirk get in someone face, make himself a rep. Hell, slap somebody during the regular season and get suspended for a couple of games, but get rid of the "Dirk has no heart" mantra that is not just in the fans and commentator's head, but also in the the heads of even the lowest of NBA players. How many lower grade players would ever have walked up to Jordan and put their hands in his face? When these acts occur, it seems to really rattle Dirk. And I like Dampier for what he does, but he has to make people not want to mess with his players or want to come to the hole. The toughest player's on that team are small forwards: Stackhouse and Howard who will foul hard or stand up for themselves. Oh yeah, Bass is making a case for toughness too. out of 15 players, that's not good...

April 23, 2008  09:02 AM ET

oops...files should be fouls of course...

i dont know why you guys continue to talk about Dirk when he seems to be the only one playing well this series.

What about JKidd? Where's he been? he's supposed to be the "difference maker." I'm glad he left Jersey.

April 23, 2008  09:18 AM ET

I must admit I felt bad for Dallas last night. It was bad! Chris paul is awesome, but I think Dallas just flat out played lke punks

April 23, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Dirk frustrates the ehck out of me. I'm a diehard Lakers fan but I love the game of basketball and enjoy watching other great teams too. Dirk frustrates the heck out of me. I couldn't figure out why a 7 footer like him stands outside the 3 point line on every play and he doesn't help on defending the line.

If they don't get their act together and win the next two at home, their done!

April 23, 2008  09:40 AM ET

He's fired no matter what. As long as you 7 footer lives out side the 3 point line you have no chance. Also having an 75 year old point guard (JK) doesn't help either.

He, they should have known that before getting Kidd...they're missing Diop and Harris right now. At least Harris had a better chance of keeping up with Chris Paul and Diop added interior presence. They're so screwed!

April 23, 2008  10:05 AM ET

he should be.....Im on the "hot" seat

April 23, 2008  10:12 AM ET

Please fire him! SA can use a great assistant head coach since PJ moved on. I figure a few years directly under Pop and AJ can take over. After that we'll all see that it was the players (an owner) not the coach. Dallas just seems dead inside. There is nothing to inspire. Sorry AJ come back to SA where you belong.

So how is that trade working out for you? And of course they gave up their 2008 first round draft pick to land Kidd.

April 23, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Some of you guys are nuts, and obviously haven't watched many Mavs games this year. Dirk has been taking it to the hole a lot more than in years past, and the fact that a seven footer can shoot long balls like he does often disrupts many defences. If it weren't for his late seaon play they might not even be in the playoffs. He's been one of the few bright spots so far, and has been playing damn good ball. Any team in the league wold love to have him.The probelm with the Mavs lies elsewhere, including their coach. Plus they ran into Chris Paul playing like Superman. He'd be shredding apart just about any time right now.

April 23, 2008  10:20 AM ET

The true problem is the personnel. Somebody traded his whole team away for one of the most overrated players ever.

April 23, 2008  10:33 AM ET

That lopsided trade was made at Avery's request, because he apparently realized he isn't good enough as a coach to make D. Harris a better player. Now he's alienated the guy he wanted and is still getting his pants pulled down by opposing coaches. There's going to be a Mavs fire sale in the off season, and everyone but Dirk will be available.

That 2008 first round draft pick would have been one of the last picks in the first round so unless you package that with someone like Josh Howard and Brandon Bass it would have been useless. The NBA draft isnt as vital as the NFL draft. If you arent in the top 10-12 then you probably arent going to get that good of a player unless you are lucky. OVerall the trade has worked out fine. We got Jason Kidd to come in a do what we wanted him to, find the open player. Devin Harris was a good shooting guard. He wasnt a point guard. Maybe the Mavs would have been better without the trade or they could have been a lot worse. Ill put my money that they would have been worse.
