UCLA quarterback tweaks knee

An unwelcome flashback to last season visited UCLA's spring practice, as No. 1 quarterback Patrick Cowan sat out Tuesday's practice after "tweaking" his knee near the end of Monday's workout. Both Cowan and Coach Rick Neuheisel downplayed the injury and team officials said an MRI came back negative. Still, it was a reminder how fragile the Bruins were at quarterback last season, when they lost Cowan and Ben Olson to injuries for extended periods of time. Cowan suited up and Neuheisel was confident he would return Thursday, when the Bruins practice again.

I bet he tweaked the knee when the team "jumped the wall" and skipped practice!

They need to go with a Freshman QB. These 2 guys are like 70 year old men.

i almost feel bad for whomever falls backwards into the starting job behind that OL. i'd be faking injuries too.
on the ucla side, do you guys know what the deal is with the bands not being able to play at opposing venues anymore (other than football)?

Good to see that Neuheisel is toughening up these girly boys.... it eases my mind to know that UCLA is still going to be patsies next year....

MARIN....I think the removal of oppostion bands has to do with being able to sell more tickets for those seats. I don't like it since college sports are all about atmosphere, but the almighty dollar always wins

Serves Neihisal right, his son is my friend, I shouldn't say that.

An O-line who needs work... Your best QB is as fragile as your oldest QB's ego... Sunshine is on the way bruins... I just don't think there will be much this year...Unless your Freshman Class... REALLY makes things happen

April 23, 2008  07:58 PM ET

who cares...its a football team that wears baby blue...the QB was going to get smashed anyway with that porous OL. NeuWeasel has brought bad karma to Westwood and Chow wont be able to balance it out. at least they have Hoops to fall back on

This isn't good news for Bruins' fans. Opposing teams are going to be diving at that knee. (Why do coaches let reports like this get out? Do they have to talk about their players' injuries?)

April 24, 2008  04:07 PM ET

Like opposing D's don't dive at the knees of EVERY QB they play against.

How could Rick let this super secret news out about a knee tweak FOUR MONTHS before the season starts!?! What a fool! UCLA's weakness is exposed!

April 25, 2008  05:27 PM ET

BruinsWin!

Idiot. Opposing teams do not "dive at the knees of EVERY QB they play against." Chops at knees or ankles can be (and have been) taken to be A) roughing the passer, and B) unsportsmanlike conduct. The penalty calling isn't as stringent as in the NFL, but it's there. Most such injuries occur because of mishaps rather than "dives" by opposing teams. To advertize such an injury this way is to be a bull's eye on the injured knee.

It's over anyway for Cowan anyway since its a cruciate ligament injury. Aloha, 08 season, Bruinoids.

Substitute "put" for "be."
