Bengals coach Marvin Lewis challenged Chad Johnson to follow through on his threat to sit out the season. "I think he has made it clear he's not going to play, and that's what I've been aware of since the end of last season," Lewis said of Johnson. "I think it's time to do what you say you're going to do, and we'll move forward. "He has a contract through 2011. He stated (that) without an opportunity to go to another team with a new contract, he wasn't going to play. I think he's a man of his word, and says he's not going to play, so don't play."

shrug, if he decides to sit out. goodbye hall of fame, it takes stats to get there. and whatever team you end up on, won't get you the ball as much as palmer does. and the years you will sit out are going to cost you stats as well.

enjoy becoming just another over-paid selfish infant.

Marvin has this right. Do what you say, stay away.

great play by Marvin Lewis. Call him out, and make him stick to his threats. We'll see how lippy Johnson is come the 3rd week of the season with no sign of caving in coming out of Cincinnati. This move will set a great precedent, and will make the Bengals more respectable as an organization, to me. the on-field product may weaken, but the principle of it is what its all about. And now he's put Johnson on the spot...

Good for Marvin. It's nice to see someone has the balls to actually stand up to a whiney athlete. Hope johnson gets some splinters while on the bench

It would be nice if 85 came to the Eagles.

April 23, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Coach Lewis, I just became a Bengals fan and your my coach!

April 23, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Im glad to see a team taking a stand on this insanity.
Not a great "business" decision but a great moral one.
Sit out Chad. In fact, sit out to 2011.
The Bengals may take a hit on it but it cant be worse than it has been

April 23, 2008  10:28 AM ET

How much do you think Marvin Lewis regrets becoming the head coach of this team? I guarantee if he could go back in time, there is no way he would ever sign with this circus of a team.

April 23, 2008  10:42 AM ET

omg ravens you are so right, cincinnati is indeed the only team in the history of the nfl to have a player whine about his contract.

April 23, 2008  10:51 AM ET

I do hope Marvin and the Bengals stick to their guns on this and Ocho Cinco sits on the bench with a sock stuffed in his mouth. Oh, yes I do.

April 23, 2008  10:51 AM ET

pw...I think he's referring to the legal issues.

But anyway, I now love Marvin Lewis for his stance on this. If he says he wants to sit, let him sit. If he sticks to it, I'm all over the Bengals bandwagon next year.

April 23, 2008  11:12 AM ET

This dude is the second coming of TO. F him.

The 1985 Bears let two very talented, pro-bowl caliber players sit for the entire year. Without Todd Bell and Wilbur Marshall, the Bears still did pretty well. They got Superbowl rings and Bell and Marshall never did. I would love to see that happen again. Too many people blow smoke up the read end of these stars telling them they are worth more than they are getting.

April 23, 2008  11:55 AM ET

Good for you Marvin Lewis. Let Ocho Chinko ride pine all season. Does he owe the Bengals some $$ is he sits out??

April 23, 2008  11:58 AM ET

prisonmatt07, Bengals weren't even in the top 10 teams for arrests last season. So if that was what he was talking about, he's living in 2006. And with Henry gone, that number will plummet even farther.

Teams like Miami, Houston, Tenn, Minn, Denver led the NFL arrest squad in 2007.

Yeah, no Bengals player was EVER arrested ANYWHERE. Nope, they are all boyscouts and helped my Grandmother across the street the other day...the whole team.

Seriously, Chad Johnson (thats his name btw...not Ocho Cinco....thats just another lame attempt by someone to give themselves a nickname...you dont give yourself nicknames...someone else has to give it to you. Its like George and the TBone episode of Seinfeld.)....

Seriously, though, Chad is a dbag. I hope the only way he comes into Philadelphia is by way of another team playing the Eagles.

Give him to Dallas, lord knows Jerry Jones thinks that he can straighten anyone out. Then let me watch the locker room blow up night after night...

Owens doing situps in his driveway while Chad is in his backyard rehearsing another lame dance.

I hope all his money catches fire and burns his house down.

That would be nice to see if Ocho Cinco does sit out the year. A man that doesn't honor his covenants deserves no rewards! Justice would be served!

Go Vikings!

I like this move by lewis and hope it works for them but i still think they are going to trade him.

April 23, 2008  01:08 PM ET

Good job Coach Lewis, way to stand your ground.

April 23, 2008  01:28 PM ET

This thread has become more like a Marvin Lewis fan club, and let me say I'm in! I'm glad to see him stand up to this whiny punk. Let him sit out, maybe with him on the bench along with Henry (another punk) off the team, the Bengals can improve with less distractions. It worked for the Giants when they lost Shockey, you never know...

Why is it okay for teams to CUT players......Like Seattle....but when a player out perform his contract he can't ask for a new one......And if he does he is a cry baby.....But let him get a new contract and have a bad seaon or two and the first thing the team wants to do is release him........Why is that right????????
