Walks wearing thin on Pujols
Posted: Wednesday April 23, 2008 07:26AM ET
Albert Pujols admitted his patience is wearing thin. Brewers reliever Salomon Torres paid Pujols the ultimate compliment when he walked the Cardinals' No. 3 hitter on four pitches with the bases loaded in an 8-6 game. Two innings later, Pujols couldn't take it anymore. After leading in the count 3-0 against Guillermo Mota, Pujols took a strike, then swung at two low pitches to strike out for only the seventh time this season. "I felt I didn't want to walk, and I took myself out of the strike zone to swing at that pitch," Pujols said. "The 3-0 pitch was a little low. But I tried to push too much. I should've taken my walk. It's something you learn. You press. It's the way the game goes." The game increasingly steps around Pujols. He has never walked 100 times in a season but now finds himself on pace for 154. Through Monday, Pujols' six intentional walks led the major leagues. Only Reds left fielder Adam Dunn had more walks overall (22).

peter1234 - I find that hard to believe....I am not taking a shot at you by any means, but based on what I have seen in interviews, and the fact that his current wife is extremely gorgeous....I just dont know about that...

Report Offensive CommentI'd get sick of being walked all the time too. He's up there to produce, not take walks. I think that teams that pitch around players frequently (like Bonds a few years back) are pathetic and don't like a challenging game. Sure, they're there to win at all costs (almost), but it still proves they can't trust their pitching.
Jamman | 04/23/08, 09:47 AM
Report Offensive Comment? a challenging game? your remarks confuse me Jamman... in the words of Herm Edwards..."YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME"
it comes down to the guys behind him...glaus??...making other teams pay for walking pujols on a consistent basis. thats baseball. thats why what barry did last year with bengie gaylina hitting behind him was so impressive.
its not pathetic to pitch around albert..its the way the game is played. to say..."hey lets pitch to the one guy that can beat us cuz it'll be a challenge!!" ... well that is why u need to stick to little league man.

Report Offensive CommentIf the Cardinals are really to contend into August and September, they will need to get a hitter to back up Pujols. The two offensively challenged positions in the Cardinals lineup are 2B and SS.
If the Dodgers continue their free fall (and they are already now 7 games behind Arizona!) look for the Cardinals to pursue 2B Jeff Kent or maybe try to pry OF Matt Kemp away. The Cardinals will have a glut of pitching when Mark Mulder comes back from his current rehab starts and when Chris Carpenter comes back in July/August from TJS.
Also, don't be surprised if the Cardinals look into Miguel Tejada of the Astros for the SS position. The Astros will not be able to compete in the tough NL Central with that pitching staff. Tejada is playing much better this year and despite his age discrepancy, has looked smooth in the field and quick with the bat.

Report Offensive Comment"tough NL Central"
thejobarules | 04/23/08, 10:06 AM
Are you talking about the same NL Central whose title required only 85 wins last year and whose winner was swept by a team (D-Backs) that got swept by a team (Rockies) that got swept in the WS?
Brad Wesley | 04/23/08, 10:17 AM
Report Offensive CommentYes, the Cardinals are tougher this year and so are the Cubs and Brewers. The NL Central is the only division with three teams playing .600 baseball.
Last year was last year.
The NLDS might have been different between the Cubs and DBacks if Piniella left Carlos Zambrano in longer against Brandon Webb in Game 1.
I will repost my blog article written after that game for another website about Piniella's blunder.

Report Offensive CommentThis is another reason why the Cards will tank it sooner or later. What a dumb thing to say by Pujols. A walk is a baserunner which in turn may score runs for your ballclub. What a selfish idiot worried about his own numbers.

Report Offensive CommentI am neither a Cubs or Diamondbacks fan - and definitely not a Red Sox guy, but a baseball fan who thinks the game is becoming too specialized with closers, 8th and 7th inning guys.
There are too few big game pitchers left who can carry the load for a team and too few managers today who have the guts to let his starter go longer for fear of criticsm.
thejobarules | 04/23/08, 11:18 AM
Report Offensive CommentSo he got impatient and struck out FOR THE SEVENTH TIME ALL YEAR. One bad at bat hardly brands the guy as selfish. Andruw Jones has 2-3 at bats like this every game!
