Hunter reveals racist Fenway taunts

Though the Red Sox have done a great deal to remake the image of Fenway Park in recent years, visiting players continue to voice concerns about fan conduct. The latest example came from Angels center fielder Torii Hunter. Hunter told the Press-Enterprise of Riverside, Calif., that until the last couple of years, he regularly heard racist taunts when visiting Fenway as a member of the Twins. Yesterday, Hunter was reluctant to discuss the incidents. Initially, he politely declined comment, suggesting that such offensive remarks were a thing of the past. He had, however, informed Red Sox slugger and close friend David Ortiz - with whom Hunter spent six seasons as a teammate in Minnesota - of the racist comments he'd encountered. Ortiz remains dismayed that such behavior occurred in his home ballpark.

Boston - land of some of the greatest and most virulent racists that the US has ever known. Beantown = Losertown

They continue to be the most obnoxious fans at home, appears the last couple of years has been better. I guess they think taunting is cute. It's been four years since i've been there, and back then the taunting increased as the game went on, and was directly proportional to the amount of beer consumed. The team manager there is a professional and of the Joe Torre type school, providing a calming effect, and things may be getting better. Not that other fan bases are better, don't get me wrong, for some weird reason, the yankee fans are most obnoxious on the road, but the NY team and the boston team draw crowds. Aas an example: Baltimore was in first place then second place, the last NY/Baltimore series, prior to the series it was announced the O's team were drawing 15 K per game, I guess on average, during the three game NY series with them, they drew 40 K. interesting, of course the yankee fans were screaming etc. and the ynakees lost two out of three there...

No surprise here, Boston has THE WORST FANS. And this is not even counting the obnoxious yuppie fans that pay 1200 a ticket for field level seats a Fenway. This goes back to the days of Bill Russell.

April 23, 2008  08:49 AM ET
