The Marlins are genuinely unsure if they'll do a long-term deal with Hanley Ramirez and are in no rush to decide. He's eligible for arbitration the next three offseasons and free agency after 2011.

Why would they sign him when they haven't signed any of their other young stars?

Exactly. He is a goner. He is the next 25 million dollar man.

April 23, 2008  08:37 AM ET

2011? Well that should be just enough time for Detroit to replenish it's far system again to bring another Marlin to Detroit. I mean what is it now?
Dombrowski, Leyland, Robertson, Jones, Renteria, Pudge, Sheffield, Cabrera, and Willis? Am I missing anyone else?

April 23, 2008  09:33 AM ET

After a few years in AAAA ball, you're now ready to come back to Boston.

April 23, 2008  09:41 AM ET

4A ball is an etherial stop between AAA and the bigs.

April 23, 2008  09:45 AM ET

Otherwise known as "small market teams."

April 23, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Yep, should be just about time to bring him home to Boston again. A year or two of arbitration ought to get him expensive enough that the Marlins "can;t afford" him, and the Sox are ready to trade back for him and sign him to a long term deal.

April 23, 2008  12:47 PM ET

Bring him back to Boston? Didn't the Julio Lugo Era just begin!

April 23, 2008  12:57 PM ET

We will gladly trade you Jugo and Jed Lowrie for Hanley Ramirez - RIGHT NOW !!!

April 23, 2008  12:57 PM ET

Oppps meant Lugo not Jugo - sorry.

April 23, 2008  04:14 PM ET

the marlins are generally retarded if they dont sign this kid

IMAGINE if he could play defense...you know, half his job....he might get 50 million! :-)

He'll Be a Yankee.... and Jeter will play 1st. =)

So, you're saying the Yanks will replace the 2nd worst fielding SS in baseball with the worst? :-)

Interesting strategy...

I think you got something there even though I dislike the Yankees. Jeter on first Ramirez on second A-Rod back to SS and Cano at third.

April 26, 2008  08:51 AM ET

Yeah we may lose him by 2011, if we don't have a stadium by then, but question is..how many World Series rings will he have by that time as this "small market" team continues to grow into a contender without a ridiculous 100+ million dollar payroll :)

April 26, 2008  11:46 PM ET

we'll beat the redsox in game 7 at dolphin stadium in the '09 world series. oh and we'll welcome pudge back here for another year or two if he wants to be a part of another world championship team. go marlins.

Please come to Boston for the springtime...
