Pirates may buy out Morris

The Pirates will not rule out buying out the contract of starter Matt Morris or any other player if circumstances warrant, team president Frank Coonelly said yesterday, but he added that this is not the current focus. A release would force the team to swallow Morris' $10,037,283 salary, as well as the $1 million buyout of his 2009 option, all of it guaranteed. Manager John Russell said Morris' lack of velocity is seen as less of a culprit than "a glitch in his mechanics or release point" that the team is working to address.

Is this newspaper trying to destroy the Pittsburgh sports industry? Constant articles about salary problems, trading to save $$$ and even just $$$ on its own to a population that has been broke and passed by for 4 decades. Tjhen you read the article and the Bucs are working on it. Unless I am mistaken, the city already built the new stadia for the teams, only problem is getting the money to make them competitive.

Why Pitt why?

April 23, 2008  08:56 AM ET

They had no business picking this guy up in the first place.

I feel kinda sorry for the Pirates. They get him to try to get some stability and he stinks it up ever since stepping foot in Pittsburgh. Then again, they deserve this for being stupid enough for picking up Morris in the first place.

he freakin blows. i could smack a homer off him.

Its sad to see such a dominant pitcher during his prime enter into the twilight of his career. Having said that, his time in the majors is up unless he can turn it around before the all-star break. He needs to start juicing in order to save his career...P.S. Matt, Major League Baseball can't test for HGH still!

April 23, 2008  10:56 AM ET

He was never really that good. If it wasn't for Dave Duncan...

April 23, 2008  11:06 AM ET

who cares

April 23, 2008  11:16 AM ET

I never understood this trade in the first place...what the deuce.

April 23, 2008  11:49 AM ET

The spendthrift owners brought him on to pitch batting practice. The dog (Jack Russell) just got it wrong and threw him in the rotation.

April 23, 2008  12:13 PM ET

Put him in the bull pen. he'll fit in well with Grabow.

April 23, 2008  12:23 PM ET

The New York Yankees could definitely use Morris to upgrade their horrendous starting pitching. It might make them contenders again !!!

April 23, 2008  01:58 PM ET

Broke and passed by for four decades? Do you know anything about the Pittsburgh region? Just because the city is in the rust belt, it doesn't mean that it's in some incredible decline. Economically speaking, Pittsburgh has been the model of rebirth compared to other cities that faced similar manufacturing collapses in the early 80's. Your perspectives on the region are about 25 years off.

This was a poor trade made by a GM and front office that is no longer running the show. I would think that the current group would not have made that trade. I was at the game for Morris' last start, and genuinely felt bad for him. The guy wasn't uncaring and just going through the motions; he just simply could not make the pitches he needed to make. Though, one fan did put his salary in proper perspective when he shouted, "I can't believe you make more money than Sidney Crosby."

He never should have left the Cardinals for more money all those years ago. The Cards won a series and he never has looked the same. I know the great defense of the Cards wasn't the only reason why he succeeded in St Louis but it definitely helped.

Morris and LaRoche make more money than anybody on the Pirates, and they've been arguably the worst players this year (and I only say arguably because Jose Bautista is still on the team). Getting rid of Morris might not be the best solution with the money issues, but sticking him in the bullpen and giving Van Benschoten another try wouldn't be a bad option.

April 23, 2008  03:56 PM ET

Who is Matt Morris, I only can think of one Morris, Jim, or Jack, Morris, and Johnny Morris.

April 23, 2008  04:31 PM ET

He hasn't been the same pitcher since his injury in 2003.

He's a fierce competitor so I know this is killing him.
