Rodriguez closer to return
Posted: Thursday April 24, 2008 08:07AM ET
Based on a conversation Alex Rodriguez had with hitting coach Kevin Long, Joe Girardi expects to see Alex Rodriguez at US Cellular Field tonight. Nevertheless, the smart money isn't on Rodriguez returning to the lineup because of a strained right quadricep muscle.

only a couple of games but they are playing better without him right now.

Report Offensive CommentI wish the Yanks could play more games like last night. 7 innings from the starter & timeling hitting. Bullpen is again the issue. Mid relief stinks (walks....) and Mo has to come in for 5 outs. A good win though.

Report Offensive CommentNot just seven innings from a starter, seven innings from Mussina.
The bullpen held.
Good, bring Mo or Joba in a little early if needed. That is the way it used to be done, you bring in your solid relief when the game is on the line and they come through. Hawkins and Farnsworth may be trouble spots but the rest of the bullpen are pitching well enough.

Report Offensive CommentThe bullpen held because they had a 5 run lead. Joba neees to stay in the bullpen.
And good for Mike (Jamie Moyer) Mussina.

Report Offensive CommentIt's april- if he needs a few more days- now is teh time.
No reason to rush back and re-injure it. He is too valuable
As far as Mussina- other than Manny- he's pitched well enough to stop being abused by us. He is a 4th or 5th starter. He's not a #1 that only gives up 1-2 runs per outing. He will give up 3-5 runs in 6 innings- anything more is gravy

Arrange for them to only play the Rangers and you're there.

Report Offensive CommentThat is the thing with Mussina, he can pitch well enough to stay in the rotation, but then goes through periods of looking terrible. hopefully this performance will continue, but don't bet on it.
So with a five run lead you run out your second string relief and hope they hold on, they didn't and Mo had to come in and close the deal, still a win, and still the right managerial move.

Report Offensive CommentThey just have to know when to take Mussina out. When he collapses, he goes all the way. Joe Torre used to leave him in to long too.
buford | 04/24/08, 09:57 AM
Report Offensive CommentMoose did well because he followed the game plan set forth by Posada. Good game for the most part but man that middle relief wasn't so hot. Girardi saw the flood gates about to open and he went to Mo right away to get 5 outs. Traber needs to get his 1 guy out a night because is there really an easier job than being a lefty specialist?
bcoltrinari | 04/24/08, 10:01 AM
Report Offensive CommentEven with weakness in the bullpen i am not going to complain about this win, It is Mussina and he made me nervous every inning, just being out there.
AllStarz | 04/24/08, 10:10 AM
Report Offensive Commentno matter how well moose pitches in a game, he is prone to the 5 run inning that quickly turns a well pitched game into a loss. he has done that more times than anyone in the last 3 yrs. once you hit the 5th inning you have to have the pen ready.
on another note, Jorge hit the ball well last night. I have to think that the Yanks plan with jorge is to convert him to a 1B once Giambi is gone next year. He can be play 1B, occasionally catch and also DH. He is a decent hitter. The only issue is who would be the FT catcher. not sure what the plan is there.

I have a friend who worked for the Mets during Cones second stint with the Mets at the end of career. They went down to Mexico City for a pre season exhibition game. My friend was out late one night and decided to pick up a h00ker. He got back to his hotel room and did his thing and when he was done, he realized he didnt have his wallet He didnt have many people he could turn to for cash at this hour and finally got in touch with David Cone. Cone told him to come to his room and he would give him the $100 he needed. He got there and Cone gave him the money and as he was walking out he realized there was $300. He told Cone that he gave him too much and Cone said "I know, see if she'll let you do her in the ****".
