Upstart league to 'complement' NFL

From the United States Football League to the XFL, alternatives to the NFL have traditionally fizzled not long after the first kickoff. But Marvin Tomlin, the founder and chief executive of the prospective United National Football League, says he can beat the odds with a league designed to complement the NFL, not compete with it. The league, which plans to play its first game in January 2009, would serve as a "minor league" to the NFL, Tomlin said, offering a second chance to college players who show promise but are not selected by a team in the NFL or the Canadian Football League. The new league's season would run from January to April and would serve as a showcase for NFL recruiters, said Tomlin, an entrepreneur based in New Haven. Games would be played in college stadiums, he said.

Bring it on.

April 24, 2008  07:45 AM ET

They could move some of the weaker NFL teams in weaker markets like Detroit, Kansas City and Pittsburgh and put in minor league teams. Just kidding...

April 24, 2008  08:29 AM ET

They could move Miami there so they could practice winning 2-3 games a year. It should help their confidence.

April 24, 2008  08:36 AM ET

I don't think it will last, but who knows. The timing is pretty good though with the threat of an end to labor peace in the NFL. A new league could seriously click...if it lasts even that long.

I'd like to see it work, though didn't we try that experiment before?

Anyone remember "We Laugh" (WLAF - World League of American Football)? It was designed to be a "spring league" feeder for (and funded by)the NFL that, after a few years, was banished to Europe and eventually scrapped.

More pro football, life is good.

This is a very good idea. America isn't yet over saturated with Football and this market will prove valuable to many NFL teams looking for a local venue to vet out players with great talent, but not enough game tape.

April 24, 2008  11:55 AM ET

Just like the United States Football League and their "Spring Football" approach back in the early 1980's, look for this idea to go belly-u[=p within two years. It is a good idea, but the NFL does not want this.

Who wouldn't want to watch a bunch of guys who can't cut it in the NFL. Oh they can't hack the CFL either...**** this.

Hey Beer-n-Drums, Outofshapeandinjured insults your city and you deflect to another. Pretty weak!

April 24, 2008  01:27 PM ET

CANNED AFTER 1 SEASON, PERIOD!!!!!!!

April 24, 2008  03:25 PM ET

I respect beer n drums and the Pirate logo and I would like to see small market teams compete and win. Something that does NOT happen in MLB and some other sports. The fans have to get the politicians to legalize sports betting or find a way to fund teams like the Pirates who have an awesome history!

April 24, 2008  03:32 PM ET

Hold on, here we go again...

April 24, 2008  06:01 PM ET

I think this is a great idea. I like the idea of more football. I always seem to have a "sports lull" at the end of football season (NFL and NCAA). I can't get into the NBA or NHL until their playoff time and MLB hits at the same time.

...However the best way for this to work is it was directly linked to the NFL. The NBA has the D-League which seems to do well and it is (to my knowledge) linked to the respective team's city. Teams that have practice squads and deeper positions could benefit from this. On the flip side, I could see where owners would be skeptical of investing in more players who play more minutes and risk injury.

Welcom UNFL!

Isn't that what college football is for?

Golley............ good teeth, but not a lot of sense.......

I love college football for the tough and struggle and positioning it takes to be number one in your divisions and I like crossovers to signigy the great abilities of less fortunate teams to surpass the athletic ability of their so called significant others across the regions of America....

After all, it is AMERICA!!!!!! The land of the free and the land of opportunity!!!!

Where is President Bush?????

Golley........... long live the flag of the United States of America!!!!!!

That's how the AFL survived for a decade. They survived just barely, but survival is all it takes. If they trot out a decent product they might just fill that gap between February and April for NFL junkies.

April 24, 2008  09:32 PM ET

good idea.

April 24, 2008  09:58 PM ET

The USFL would have worked if Donald Trump hadn't salaries through the stratosphere. One of the ideas of the USFL was to keep payrolls at a moderate level. Trump threw that out the window.

There was also a World League back in the 1970's. Charlotte had a team called the Hornets. A lot of NFL guys jumped ship for a big pay day.
