Jets prepared to draft Ryan

if Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan is available in Saturday's draft, the Jets are prepared to call an audible and look toward the future. Looking up from the No. 6 position, the Jets can't be sure what will happen with picks two through five, but they appear to be targeting Ryan and Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, multiple league sources said Wednesday. Although it's believed they prefer McFadden - they might be willing to trade up for him - the Jets are high on Ryan and could conceivably make the franchise-altering move for a quarterback.

If the Jets are high on Ryan, they must be high on crack too.

First of all, Ryan will not be there at #6 because the Chirefs, now that they have two first round picks, will take Ryan at #5. But McFadde WILL be there. Contrary to popular belief, there is no way Oakland takes McFadden at #4. They'll use that pick to grab Gholston and sure up that defensive line and create a pass rush.

But wasn't Kellen Clemens just blessed by the pope?!

April 24, 2008  07:36 AM ET

The NFL should give the Jets the top 15 picks in this year's draft since the Pats fans think the Jets will be awful no matter what. Then watch all the fun in the AFC East in about two years.

@@@@@@@@He's a sexy player. I am his loyal adorer. Seems he has a personal account on a celeb&millionaire dating site called 'Rich Match Making com'. Is he single? He wanna hook up with hottie or cuttie?

Luvneverends

Well spoken - you obviously did not take your education seriously.

April 24, 2008  08:19 AM ET

PLEASE DO! Take Ryan so we can take Gholston who'll eat him up

April 24, 2008  08:42 AM ET

I doubt he will be there by the 6th pick.
Atlanta will probably take him

April 24, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Ryan will be a good pro.. If they pass on McFadden expect Jerry Jones to make a move to get him.

April 24, 2008  09:09 AM ET

The teams that take a pass on Ryan in the draft and are in need of a QB will regret that decision..He is worth the risk..

April 24, 2008  09:10 AM ET

I just can't believe that the Jets would want to trade up for him.....
lose picks AND Have to pay him qb $
when in reality.....he's NOT THAT GOOD- his team did nothing (check int #'s)

Just because there isn't a 'stud' qb and he is the best of the bunch, shouldn't mean he goes that high

April 24, 2008  09:29 AM ET

jgb- I think theyr'e wiling to trade up for Run DMC, but will take Ryan if he's still there at six. The wording is a little odd in the article. I REALLY hope he's gone before the Jets pick, I'm not completely sold on him.

April 24, 2008  09:29 AM ET

i agree with jgb. i dont think any of the QBs in the draft are top 10 worthy.

Someone please explain to me why they would pass on Leinart and Cutler 2 years ago, apparemtly in favor of the "Tom Brady" theory of not drafting QB's in the first rd, only to take a college QB with as many negatives and positives who seems to didivde scouts/teams as to whether he will be anything more than a serviceable starter in the NFL. Was Clemens that bad last year, playing only 8 games behind a "run for your life" O-line. I mean, all I kept heraing last yr during camp and the eraly part of the year weas how much Clemens had progressed, how he had the "it factor" in terms of leadership, how his strong arm would cut thru the winds at The Meadowlands...now 8 games into his NFL career, he's a bust? Take the sure impact guys in Long, Gholston or McFadden, or trade down if someone is willing and get a few extra picks, getting a CB to play opposite Revis. But please, let Ryan be some other teams 'mistake.

This smells like a smokescreen to me. This is all just to draw the Ravens in. I think the Jets should look at taking a QB in the second round (I would love for it to be Brian Brohm) but the Jets just want to trade out of 6.

April 24, 2008  09:41 AM ET

If the Jets don't take Brohm, then I am all in favor of it being John David Booty. In any case they need another QB on that roster to challenge Clemens.

April 24, 2008  09:42 AM ET

notgonnahappen. the falcs will draft him

April 24, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Well the Jets really do need a QB....if not in the first round, then surely they should pick one in the second round. Ryan will end as one of the better QBs.....4 years from now or less, you Ryan bashers will be eating your words with a fork and spoon.
