What's wrong with Delgado?

It took Mets manager Willie Randolph until May 23 of last season to drop a struggling Carlos Delgado to sixth in the batting order. He did not wait as long this year, moving Delgado down in an effort to revive a stagnant offense. Pitchers have thrown a steady diet of outside pitches to Delgado -- an estimated 70 to 80 percent, he said -- hoping he would try to pull them and hit weak ground balls. Delgado had three hits in his last 35 at-bats, though he and Randolph said the statistics were a poor indication of his comfort level at the plate.

I think I read somewhere that Delgado came down with that "F. Thomas/J. Giambi" disease. Something about being old, overrated and overpaid...

April 24, 2008  08:41 AM ET

Overrated like that 1st Baseman you have with the 30+ K's this season? Or overrated like that pitching staff you have?

Field Marshall Sunny Day | 04/24/08, 08:32 AM

Whoever said my pitching staff was any good? Doesn't someone have to say they are good to be overrated?

As for Ryan Howard, is Ortiz overrated? He is having the same kind of bad year

Its funny that you listed him as F. Thomas because whoever signs him is going to be saying F Thomas all year long

I think the same would apply to Delgado. Nobody in NY has said this guy is any good since '06

Senor Troy, as much as I enjoyed your work in such educational films as "Alice's Adventures Through a Windshield Glass", I do recall hearing a lot from the Philly faithful about how overrated Santana was and that the Philly staff was just as good. Even though we're 3 weeks in, I think its safe to say we can put that comparison to rest even without the Mets #2 & #5 starters.

Field Marshall Sunny Day | 04/24/08, 09:04 AM

You didn't hear that argument from me. I thought Santana would struggle and save for one game I was wrong. I always said you have the better rotation and we have the better lineup. But, like you said, it is early. What we need to do is get the frauds that are called the marlins out of the top of the division. They don't belong there.

April 24, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Delgado looks completely done. Worse than a slump, it looks worse. Sooner or later, you gotta drop him outta the line-up if he keeps this up. Then who's gonna play first? Me don't know.

I am a big believer in karma....this ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT who is allowed in my country because he can play a game wouldn't acknowledge the national anthem....he should consider himself lucky

Delgado is a class act..... unfortunately he's been in decline since last year. It happens. People get old.... pre steroids, it was common for players to decline significantly after 32/33 yrs old. With foreign players, you often have to factor in whether they are a couple of years older than they say they are.....don't expect it to get any better.

Excellent point, I am going to assume sans steroids, that Delgado is actually 45

Wait until he tells the real TRUTH. He's Manny Mota, he's 64 and he's been taking roids for 26 years.

All i can say, is that we got the better end on this one. Usually when Toronto lets go one of there players, he later becomes a star, Chris Carpenter anyone....

I am glad to see this Bum in the Slumps, and I hope to see NY mets go with them... Didnt they learn from there brotherhood the New York Yankees, you cant buy a world Series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Prob not, to much money in front of them to see what the real issue is!!!

Lets cut him open and count the rings

A lot of homegrown talent up there in Toronto?? Enjoy 3rd place...again and again and again

April 24, 2008  11:10 AM ET

I hate to remind you people, but Delgado from Puerto Rico, which is part of the USA, so "foreign player" and "illegal immigrant" really don't apply (or shouldn't even matter).

Isn't toronto in last right now?
