Chalmers on first-round bubble

For the last two weeks, Mario Chalmers, a junior, has been too busy thinking about the future. He announced Wednesday afternoon that he will declare for the 2008 NBA draft, joining teammates Brandon Rush and Darrell Arthur in the draft pool. Chalmers, like Arthur, will not hire an agent, giving him the option of returning to KU. Chalmers said that he will stay in the draft if he feels confident that he will be a first-round pick. As of now, he says, he is being projected between Nos. 25-35, which places him firmly on the first-round bubble.

He could be good for a team at the end of the first, but I think he's better off going back to school.

go back to school-
enjoy being BMOC after winning the title

your draft stock will likely be the same next year- possibly better, since there are a ton of pg's coming out (with the same skill-set) this year.

He should come back to Kansas and give another year, because we all know he will only be a decent player in the NBA so he should stay and play another season at KU

He is similar to Chauncey Billups, only he has a jumper right out of college...

He's a player that definitely could use an additional year maturing -- I'm sure he thinks he's as "hot" as he'll ever be having drained the 3 at the end of regulation to get KU into overtime to steal the National Championship but look at the improvement Brandon Rush had this year by staying in school. Chalmers is definitely 2d Round material -- stay and move up.

Oh, and Darrell Arthur is even more deluded -- his problem has been consistency and he's not gonna master that sitting on the end of a bench in Memphis or someplace. I've hated the NBA for years -- just don't like the isolation ball they play -- and now the NBA is ruining college basketball. Crazy for all of these good, but not great, players to be going to pit themselves against mature men as they're still physically developing. But hey, the ducats call ...

WA2Sea,

While I like Mario, he isn't close to Chauncey when he came out. Chauncey was the 3rd overall. The bad thing was him being coach by Pitino. This guy could always play, he just needed a system that fit him.

When will these kids learn? They need to be sure of being a first round pick, if not stay in school. Is it really that bad being the "big man on campus" for one more year?

KU is going to be pretty bad this year, as they're graduating two starters, and since Arthur and Rush are both going early. Mario doesn't want to risk injury on a college team that doesn't have much chance of winning anything. He's smart to come out. If he ends up on a good team like the Spurs or Jazz, he could be a solid bench performer for the next few years.

John L,

There are no guarantee contracts for second round pick. They have to fight to make a team. I understand your point the down side is too risky.....

Mario,
Stay in school if your not picked in the top half of the 1st round. You will have the opportunity to improve your statistics for NBA scouts with Darnell, Rush, and Kaun, moving on. Really like you at Kansas.

Watched him play from high school (when he was a top 2 pg nationally) on up. He has an interesting blend of talents. He is a stud defender and plays bigger than his size. Wasn't a pure pg at Kansas, but lead his team in assists. And he converts shots from all over the floor, both off kickouts and ball reversals, as well as off the dribble. He seems like a more rounded offensive player than Rondo was coming out of school, and his defense is comparable. The only concern is that he wasn't the pg in college and that is his pro position, but nonetheless he could be a solid contributor on a good team, although I do not see him being the focal point of a team.
