Mavs' Howard admits to pot use

Friday might not have been the beginning of the end for Josh Howard as a Maverick. It may have come a week before or nearly a year earlier. But when the Mavericks forward used a local radio show to detail his off-season marijuana use for the second time in a week and third time in a year, he certainly made his future cloudier. The timing of his latest admission is what shocked the Mavericks and prompted owner Mark Cuban to say before Game 3 against New Orleans that the Mavericks will address Howard's admitted illegal substance use.

I come to the conclusion a long time ago that ALL NBA players smoked pot, covered their bodies in tatoos, had shoot outs at various night clubs, and all in all, were nothing more than your typical inner city gangbangers.

Spray it don't say it

April 26, 2008  08:07 AM ET

Image problem? You bet, the NBA does have an image problem.

April 26, 2008  08:25 AM ET

So what?! It's just weed. If he was admitting to coke or meth....that's a different story

Speak for your own team. Our Spurs should be the shining example, but the media seems to want to glorify the thug players. Even the commentator calling the game yesterday made it seem that the game was more important than the pot use. Like they should have hidden it untl after the playoffs. Name the last Spur that did anything like this while he was a Spur. Rodman, and he's bipolar. So before you cast your "they are all bad" net, leave the defending champions out of it. And until the media stops hyping the thugs, we'll just keep winning and the rest can keep whining.

WOW! Just another conceited Spurs fan thinking his team, and ALL players on it, arre saints and never do anything wrong. Every team, and I mean every team, has players that do things they shouldn't. Just b/c it isn't made public, that doesn't mean they don't do it. I have nothing against the Spurs, I was and still am a big David Robinson fan (more class than anyone in the league), but to say keep the Spurs out of it when Cheating Patriots just included the whole league in his statement is simply absurd. Get off your high horse, come back down to Earth, and if you still think your **** tastes like ice cream, then you eat it and stop feeding it to those of us who know sports.

April 26, 2008  11:07 AM ET

I think pot is just what they need. Now that that's done, who thinks the Spurs looked a little old last night? You can see the age catching up with them, I mean when Tim dunked on Amare the second time, I thought wow he's so old. Let's not even begin to talk about Parker, I mean where is his head at? He needs to get in the game, only 41 points. Man he's probably just thinking of which island he'll take Eva to after the season's over. They are done. I think the Suns will roll off 4 straight. You can just see it in their eyes, the hunger, the longing, the focus. Suns in 7 baby. (HA!)

We've come to the conclusion that you're a short-sighted idiot. There are countless players that never show up on police blotters. If this is all you see, it's because this is what you were looking for. try using your remote. I'm sure you can find Little House on the Prairie"or the Waltons somewhere.

April 26, 2008  11:14 AM ET

jpd, when Eva Longoria accepted her Peoples Choice Award for Best TV Actress (which Tony Parker didn't attend), she thanked her husband for his support. So, was Tony Parker going out with married woman?

A shining example of every school boys dream!

April 26, 2008  11:14 AM ET

Michael Landon was the man!!

April 26, 2008  11:26 AM ET

Wow; I got pissed off and forgot what I came in to say. If Howard doesn't have any better since than to open his mouth on radio and admit to his substance abuse while the team is down 2-0, anything they do to him, he deserves.

April 26, 2008  12:27 PM ET

that sound you just heard
was the removal of dallas mavs stickers from thousands of dfw-area vehicles,
and the affixion of dallas stars stickers to thousands of dfw-area vehicles.

and the cycle begins anew :/

April 26, 2008  12:54 PM ET

JPD,
WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING TODAY? I WANT SOME OF IT TOO...

April 26, 2008  12:55 PM ET

Yeah, because Howard is the *only* person who's ever used marijuana. And I'm positive he's the only one in DFW who's ever used it. Riiiiiiiiiiiight...

It's marijuana, not heroin. It's the off-season, not in-season. And if anyone here thinks Howard is the only pro athlete who does it in the off-season is seriously mistaken. I'm sure even some of those clean-cut hockey pucks use it, d-minus.

April 26, 2008  01:10 PM ET

Marijuana leads to harder drugs! Kind of like, playing for the Dallas Mavericks leads to getting traded to the NJ Nets!

April 26, 2008  02:15 PM ET

Drunk Eli, let me correct you.

Does marijuana use lead to harder drugs and is that a bad thing? Absolutely!

Is getting traded from the Mavericks to the Nets a bad thing? Not necessarily, they're both losers!

April 26, 2008  02:27 PM ET

Solution: Legalize it and tax it to put the drug dealers out of business...

April 26, 2008  02:29 PM ET

Hey, come up to Canada, Josh! The raps need your skills and we have the best bud around! (although not so much in Toronto...)

April 26, 2008  02:53 PM ET

Raps, if the Mavs get booted early, (still a very strong possibility) you may get your wish. Unfortunately, that would leave the Mavericks with an even more serious shortage of youth, speed and talent. Cuban has an important decision to make. I hope he takes it seriously, as much as he harps on the NBA as product, fans its custimers and the quality of the product image in the eyes of its' consumers. MFFL!
