Peavy makes pitch for Lofton
Jake Peavy's next start is Sunday, but the Padres' ace made an unscheduled pitch on behalf of Kenny Lofton yesterday. "I like Kenny," Peavy said of the unemployed outfielder. "I think he'd bring a dimension to this ballclub that we don't have any of -- we have no team speed. "It's not my call. It's not my decision. But he'd definitely be a spark." With the Arizona Diamondbacks now 8 1/2 games ahead of the Padres in the National League West, the Home Team's suggestion box may soon be more crowded than its ballpark. There is no spark. There is no buzz. There is little reason to believe the players currently in place are capable of sustained slugging, consistent pressure on the basepaths or superior defense.

He's right, the Padres need some juice.

While it is highly unlikely San Diego is going to do this, at this point it's not a bad idea. Jim Edmonds and Scott Hairston are not getting it done offensively or defensively (Edmonds can't cover Petco, plain and simple) as was the plan in the outfield. Lofton would not be a bad idea. Peavy is not throwing anyone under the bus. He is stating facts about his team - a franchise he agreed to stay with and sign with long term in hopes the future was bright. As a Padre fan/realist, I don't see too much being bright about my team right now.

Peavy must be remembering Lofton as he used to be -- why bring in an old guy? -- there must be some young speedster around -- look at the 'no name' kids the Giants found ....

Hey Coletrain: Speaking of Padre problems (take a number, get in line) the catcher position is wearing real thin with Barrett out still. What's your opinion on Chad Moeller possibly helping an anemic offense like San Diego (I just saw he was designated for assignment)?

Thanks for info hiya...

Hiya is correct. He's a defensive catcher that has just gotten hot as they called him up.
I don't think he can keep that up. I can see him hitting .250 but not like the way he was hitting before.

Don't you have Josh Bard, Keith? He's good...

I can't believe Lofton isn't on a team. He still has some baseball in him.

He's right. Lofton, even though 40+ years old, has the "IT" factor that every athlete is looking for. Lofton has the experience, speed, and can mentor other ballplayers.

Coletrain: I love Bard!!! If there's a positive right now for SD it's that this guy has taken the workload behind the plate on his own on a daily basis with Barrett out. I just fear Barrett being gone for a long time and eventually Bard needing a breather. I saw Moeller's name in the transactions in the paper in this morning and here you see my silly knee-jerk reaction...

As a Texas Rangers' fan I can't believe that the Rangers aren't talking to Lofton! If you haven't noticed the Rangers are one of the worst teams in baseball.

Notice how Lofton changes teams every year? Wonder why? He's pretty much burned bridges in every city in America..... he can only be tolerated for a very short time, despite his talent. You think maybe word is around MLB by now?

Peavy is a smart man. Lofton makes the whole lineup better. What do the Padres have to lose?

not only the pads, but any team could use a player like kenny, even the cubs

why not Juan Pierre? Dodgers have too many OF's I'd rather have him than old man Lofty

Lou Gossett, Pierre would cost a prospect plus the Padres would have to pay his salary, which is way too high, for the next few years. Lofton would give as much or more in terms of contributions to the team, plus he'd be a one-year signing at a fraction of the cost.
Are you a Dodger fan that wants your team's mistakes erased, or just mildly retarded?

I'm a Padres fan but the NL West is stacked as always and its a struggle to keep up with all the other hot teams in the division. Maybe a change does need to happen to spark the Pads.

Something needs to happen. I hate so see them continue to get older, but something different has to take place if they hope to contend for their division.
