Did Crosby's dive sink Rangers?

The Rangers willing to discuss it had no trouble arguing that a bit of acting by Sidney Crosby drew the penalty that led to the deciding Pittsburgh power-play goal. The normally mild-mannered Martin Straka, in fact, argued so strenuously upon emerging from the penalty box and after the final buzzer that he was assessed a game-misconduct penalty at game's end. "I was just saying he was diving - that was the only thing," Straka said of his protestations to referees Don Koharski and Kelly Sutherland before and after being boxed for an interference infraction well behind a rush the Rangers already had thwarted. "That's what I thought. I was skating, too. I was moving my feet." "I think it's a weak call at that time of game," said Rangers winger Brendan Shanahan, whose summit meetings with players and executives during the 2004-05 lockout were instrumental in getting the league to crack down on obstruction away from the puck. "I think Sidney embellished. ... I just think, at that time of the game, the play was already made on the puck. It wasn't going to be an offensive chance. Kind of a tough call for the referee to make at that time."

Now they're making excuses. Crosby may or may not have embellished, I won't get into that, but here's an idea: Don't blow a 3-0 lead! One embellishment in the 3rd should not have decided a game that was 3-0 early, especially when the team that's up is one of the better defensive teams in the game. Blaming the refs is a reach - they should be blaming themsleves for not being able to show some discipline down the stretch.

April 26, 2008  08:41 AM ET

I missed that one,but I'll have to assume he took a dive.

April 26, 2008  08:58 AM ET

Sure they should have been able to protect the lead. But this was a very weird game...for both teams.
I saw the play...no question Sid embellished. But once again...we are left with a questionable call by an official in the final minutes of a tied playoff game. Based on what Koharski was calling throughout the game, I'm thinkin he got a good talking to after the way he did the last Caps/Flyers game.

April 26, 2008  09:43 AM ET

The kid geta a 10 for form and landing - gary bettman must be smiling his refs are doing their part to insure the kid gets into the finals. Way to go NHL - have refs make bogus calls late in playoff games to decide the outcome - another reason the NHL will always be a second class league -

April 26, 2008  09:55 AM ET

The refs just sucked in general this game. They swallowed their whistles for obvous penalties committed by both teams, then they would randomly decide to call things for no apparent reason. But guess, what it happened on both sides, New York lost, too bad.

April 26, 2008  09:58 AM ET

And why the hell are the Rangers complaining? They'll be making excuses this whole series, oh boo hoo Crosby dives, blah blah blah. What it comes down to is they blew a 3-0 lead, they deserved to lose.

April 26, 2008  10:04 AM ET

Embellished? Maybe a little, hard to say, not like they do in a soccer of basketball game. Was it a penalty???? YES No question he was being impeded by a slower player. Gomez should not have flailed and fell.

April 26, 2008  10:18 AM ET

The Rangers should not be complaining about anything that happened in this game...They had a three goal lead and blew it enough said! The only person the Rangers should be blaming is the man that looks back at them when they look in the mirror.

April 26, 2008  10:46 AM ET

what? did you see the replay it was a obvious call...straka is just angry he doesnt have the skills anymore

but anyway huge win for the pens, haha jagrs face at the end of the game when he hit the post was priceless

April 26, 2008  10:52 AM ET

I understand that Canada's number one hope for a diving mdal in the Olympics has a broken foot. I see an opening here for Crosby when the playoffs are over.

April 26, 2008  10:59 AM ET

the kid has skills there's no doubt about that, but he should be wearing scuba gear for as much as he dives. On a second note, the Rangers have a lot more to worry about than his diving. They should be worried about how to keep the lead when they're up 3-0

April 26, 2008  11:07 AM ET

well played, PopKing

April 26, 2008  11:11 AM ET

This isn't something new. Crosby has been doing this all season. The kid is very talented, in hockey and would be on the big screen. Does anyone recall in the first round when he decided to fly past the Senators player, jump off the ice, flew through the air, then had the nerve to get up, look at the ref with his arms open, and ask, "what, no call?"

I think its time to stop acting, start playing harder b/c if you think about it, Lemeiux never did this type of crap. Which brings me to another point... Jagr is right, Crosby and Malkin should not even be compared to Lemeiux. Mario is one of the all time top 5 players in the league. Crosby and Malking can't hold his jock.

April 26, 2008  11:18 AM ET

When a guy named #2Yanks Fan talks about holding someone's jock...I think we should all listen.

April 26, 2008  11:33 AM ET

typical of the NHL and of sindey crosby which is what pisses me off the most. yes the rangers had blown a 3 goal lead but they did come back to tie it up only to have the "face of the NHL" cry and get a call that shouldnt be made in a peewee hockey game let alone an NHL Stanley Cup Playoff game. Bettman can **** dick along with crosby that whining 13 year old girl

Hey, I do have some inciteful things to say... sometimes, haha. In all honesty though, this kid has enough talent to do some great things in this sport. I understand he's trying to draw a penalty from the other team, but personally, I'd rather do great things against a team of full strength or while they're on a power play and we're down one man, b/c it looks better. He should just play the game and leave the acting to the guys who play basketball (flopping) and football (diving to the ground from a phantom shove).

Ok, I think FanNation just whiffed with this one... to me it looks like they asterisked the wrong word, haha

April 26, 2008  11:59 AM ET

I'll take Sid's dives over Avery's BS any day. Keep this in mind "gentlemen", there have already been several on air apologies from announcers this season after replays showed legitimate calls were not dives. Most recently Pierre McGuire on NBC.
Just play the game. On another note, as someone else here said...3-0 leads should never evaporate as fast as this one did.

April 26, 2008  12:12 PM ET

Once again the whining argument, you dumbass critics like to throw that around without any evidence. Crosby WAS a whiner his first year, and he has learned. There was no whining over that call, he didn't get up and start crying to the refs, you people are so full of **** it's amazing. Anytime Crosby ever draws a penalty, it's because he dove, he whined, but of course it's not because he just got his legs chopped out from under him etc.

Point of story, you morons are the only one's doing the whining, and my apologies that the Pens are just straight up a better team and you can't accept that.

April 26, 2008  12:20 PM ET

#2YanksFan- Mario never dove, are you freaking kidding me? He was the most notorious diver when he played. Check youtube for some clips of him lifting oppenents sticks in order to draw high sticking penalties.
