Van Gundy plugs Ewing for Knicks job

Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy questioned why the Knicks might hire an inexperienced head coach when Patrick Ewing --- one of Van Gundy's assistant coaches and guru for star Dwight Howard --- is apparently not a candidate to run his former team. Former Knicks guard Mark Jackson is considered by many to be a frontrunner for the coaching position left vacant after the firing of Isiah Thomas. Jackson has never coached and is currently working as a television analyst. Ewing is interested in becoming a head coach, but told the Sentinel recently he had not been contacted by the Knicks.

I didn't really understand that so much especially since Jackson really has no experience. Patrick Ewing on the other hand has helped a lot of basketball's best big men and was always a helpful assistant. Of course, I still think an experienced coach would really be a good choice but I think I will give the Knicks the benefit of the doubt because they saw change was needed and are going to fix this mess.

So JVG is pushing Mark Jackson and SVG is pushing Patrick Ewing. The brothers Van Gundy need to get together on this one.

run while you can Patrick! I think you can be a great coach too but just not for the Knicks. That franchise is a cancer. There is no reason to think that franchise can turn around if they think it was all right to keep Isiah around.

Much has been written about Ewing's mentoring of Dwight Howard. Howard is a young man who wanted to get better, was willing to listen, and put in the work. This is not true of Eddy Curry. Good rebounders and defensive players are committed to defense and rebounding. It would be a mistake to bring in Ewing and expect similar results from the bigs in New York.
Defensive "specialists" are successful in most cases because they outwork their opponent. Can anyone invision Curry outworking anybody?

I think Ewing is just what they need. Now that that's done, who thinks the Spurs looked a little old last night? You can see the age catching up with them, I mean when Tim dunked on Amare the second time, I thought wow he's so old. Let's not even begin to talk about Parker, I mean where is his head at? He needs to get in the game, only 41 points. Man he's probably just thinking of which island he'll take Eva to after the season's over. They are done. I think the Suns will roll off 4 straight. You can just see it in their eyes, the hunger, the longing, the focus. Suns in 7 baby. (HA!)

Who has Curry had mentoring him???

Ewing COULD get through to Curry

April 26, 2008  11:43 AM ET

Carlisle better choice than Jackson or Ewing......But if Bulls are smart they will hire him

Curry is 6'11 and 300 lbs, which means he's carrying maybe 35 pounds he needs to drop. He has averaged 5 rebounds a game for a career, and plays virtually no defense. Seems to me the only committment he has is to the buffet. A new coach put into this situation doesn't have time to wait 3 years for Curry to develop into the player he should have been in the 1st place.

The other thing is Curry and Randolph don't mix. One needs to go.

man, gotta love stan van gundy and that's why we heat fans miss him...look at the guy, promoting an important assistant for a head coaching job even though this person is really helping develop one of his young stars, but unselfishly not trying to hold the guy back, but trying to help him get ahead...meanwhile, riley tried to hold SVG until he got that 2nd draft pick from Orlando, hold SVG from winning a championship so quickly so Riles himself wouldn't look outcoached by taking over something that SVG build (a winning attitude and they lost it a year after SVG left), and watch SVG go into situations where the teams previously weren't doing great, but step up to the challenge, while riles always quits when the team perform (due to his coaching obviously they did well under SVG and so are he magic, riley took over and they the heat started to stink again like the two years before SVG and he left). It sucks to be a heat fan now..

while riles always quits when the team DON'T perform WELL in the above

How will Knick faithful feel about one of their greatest warriors once he fails & gets fired?

April 26, 2008  04:23 PM ET

Isn't Tim Floyd available to be the sacrificial lamb? He did a great job of that last time

April 26, 2008  05:26 PM ET

Why should the Van Gundy brothers have the same opinion? They aren't a team, but two individuals.

April 26, 2008  06:22 PM ET

Ewing would be great for the Knicks. Firstly, he is a warrior and is not going to be intimidated by the likes of Zach Randolf or Marbury. Secondly, what's the downside, everyone expects the Knicks to suck and if he can make them respectable he's halfway there. Lastly, he gets head coaching experience and if it does not work out in NY (and why should it), he'll be ready for the next job.

April 26, 2008  07:16 PM ET

It would be a crowd pleaser and get the fans back interested at least. It would be nice to see.

And good point HOVA!

Ewing is a NY Knick Hero. That does nto make him a good coach. Nor does tutoring a 7 footer how to play. If Ewing has not been calling the plays, and working on strategy, then havin gthe Coach name on his business card does not mean much to me. Jackson, too, has no pedigree. He is, however, a Knick, Redman ( to heck with this Red Storm nonsense) and a native NY'er. One can assume a Point Guard is going to be a better coach than a Center.

Hey, Latrell Sprewell has some time on his hands. Why not tab him? He is as qualified as Jackson and Ewing. And maybe Curry could choke him!

But as a knick fan, I would prefer to see Carlysle. If George Karl could get back to his roots, he would be a good choice.
