End of the line for Pettys?

05:15 AM ET 05.29 | Kyle Petty will not be in the Chase this year because he is taking himself out of the hunt. Despite his performance Sunday, Petty will climb out of the No. 45 Dodge to work the TNT broadcast booth for five races beginning June 10 at Pocono Raceway. The move signals the beginning of what will eventually be the end of the Petty line of NASCAR racecar drivers. A Petty has competed every year since the sport's inception in 1949, from the patriarch Lee Petty to the legendary Richard Petty, followed by Kyle Petty. That torch was to be passed to Kyle Petty's son, Adam, who made his Cup debut in 2000. But he died in a crash during a practice session at New Hampshire later that year. There are no more Pettys to take over behind the wheel.

What the Petty's should do is hire Dale Jr.

That all sounds good, but Petty's is Dodge, and Jr likes Chevy!! Not sure one is going to give up or change vehicle...what do you thing?

The Petty's could adopt me!!

Kyle was never that good

Do have to wait another generation for the Petty return? I bet Richard could still climb in a car!

You gotta know when to fold 'em !!

Kyle wan't that good but Adam was more like his Grandfather. It's sad to see the state of affairs at Petty interprises both from a Driver and team perspective.

Get off Kyle...he finished 5th in points both in 1992 & 1993, and was among NASCAR's better drivers (a few of the mid-size tracks he owned back then). When he moved over to Petty Enterprises, the whole organization was starting to hit bottom, and his performance suffered in kind. And let's not dismiss the emotional impact of losing his son Adam in 2000. I can't imagine that climbing into his car every week after that was a whole lot of fun. So while you might dismiss him as a driver, do not forget the man in the car with the huge heart (Victory Gang Junction Camp)

UFgrad02 - You took the words right out of my mouth. All of the Petty's are class acts. I'm going to hate it when I have to watch a race without a Petty driving in it. I was fortunate enough to meet Richard and Kyle a few years ago at a race. We always hear of superstars and how aloof they are. Not these guys. They came out of the garage area after practicing and were obviously tired. My friends and I were camping at the track and the 2 gentlemen were walking by our campsite on the way to their motor homes. We said hello......that was it. Both of them stopped and talked with us for over an hour. Now, my friends and I are all Dale Sr. fans and fly his colors exclusively........until that day. Now, the Petty colors fly along with the Earnhardt black and silver. God bless you Petty clan. You are truly the last of the gentlemen in the sport.

There's no doubting Kyle Petty's a class act through and through, but that doesn't mean he should keep driving around being for the most part non competitive for the rest of his life just to keep the Petty name on the track. And obviously with him stepping out of the car for 5 races he realizes that too. He knows it's getting time to move on as far as driving and probably will do a part time 2008 and then call it a career. But like I said, with all the work he does for sick children and all the other charity work he does, nothing but a class act. Just time to move on from the driver standpoint.
